The redlight camera warning is ON by default, however your unit may have an old redlight camera database. The 7700 PRO comes with a 90-day trial during which you can update the redlight camera database as often as you want (we are always adding new locations). The 90-day trial starts when you register your unit for the updates. Here is the process:

    1. Register your unit here: http://aura.cobra.com
    2. Download and install the Updater Program here: http://www.cobra.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=page.display&page_id=267
The Updater Program will download a new redlight camera database into your nav unit. After the 90-day trial expires, you will still get redlight camera warnings but you will not be able to download new updates unless you purchase a subscription. The subscription rate is $29.95 / year.

The subscription can be purchased here: http://aura.cobra.com/CheckSubs.cfm

    FINALLY!

As previously announced, we had released a free map update in January. Initially the update was only available on a DVD, but we have now released the update on an SD card. Sorry for the delay.

The advantage of the SD card is that you do not need a computer. Also, it loads twice as fast as the DVD (15 minutes vs. 1/2 hour). Just pop in the SD card, turn on your unit, and press a couple buttons. Very easy to do.

Although the update is free, and getting it on a DVD is free, there is a $12 charge for the SD card. After the update you can keep the card and use it for other things, or you can even send it back to Cobra within 30 days and get your $12 back. It is a 4GB SD card.

To order, please call Customer Service at 773-889-3087. Please have your unit handy when calling, because you will need to supply the serial number.

just did the map update yesterday march 10 Went out on road today had gps on used it to find some addresses . New map update has a fault I work around Toronto ontario Canada before the update it listed and spoke the proper names of the hwys EG turn right onto hwy 401 or stay to the left on hwy 401 now it refers to all the hwys around Toronto as O-N 401 or O-N 427 hope you can update a patch to fix this becouse its easy to miss a exit while waiting for it to finish telling you where to exit
    thanks

I too installed the update. Here's an example of my problem.

If I set a route from say Pickering Ont to Cornwall Ont, the unit will now call out each exit ramp before I get to it, telling me to "stay to the left," once I pass the exit ramp, it will tell me how far to the next exit ramp and tell me the same thing. Stay to the left.
I found this really bothersome considering there are quite a few exit ramps between Pickering and Cornwall.

And while in Montreal Quebec, it will read the number of the exit in french. Whats up with that?

    Thanks.

ps..I installed my unit in my Pete on the Sunvisor using two large black plastic ties and ran the wires in the dash to a fused power source. Looks and works great. Now I can finally see the right lower side of my front end with out the gps blocking my vision, and what surprises me is I am still locked on to all the sats without the extension antenna. Cool!

Okay, so I am about to get a truck gps and am torn between the RM-TND 500 and the Cobra GPSM 7700. Can anyone please tell me the advantages either has on the other.

    - Has anyone used both that can tell us which is most accurate? (Doesn't tell you that you are approaching a street after you've already passed it, etc.)

    - Are either going to add lane assist anytime soon?

-Promiles vs Rand McNally? (My company's Qualcom uses RM. I thought it might be good to go Promiles just to have the routing comparison.)

I am going to post this question on the RM - TND 500 thread too, just to make sure I get all the info I can before I drop $$ on a new gadget.

    Thanks for the great thread!

I don't think that it can be stressed to drivers enough that you CAN NOT rely on gps. It is one of three tools in your toolbox. 1. Motor Carriers Atlas 2. GPS and 3. The one that bridges the gap, COMMON SENSE.

In Chicago a couple days ago, I was approaching the road that I was looking for, but wasn't sure it was it. No street signs. I went past it and was sure that had to be it, after I passed it. I pulled over and looked it up on Mapquest on my phone. That was it. Lucky me, I was able to just drive around the block. It would have been nice to have a GPS confirm that was my turn. Truck drivers know how much time it can cost you to miss a turn or when you have been given bad directions. (No place to turn around for several miles sound familiar?) GPS is a usefull tool that must be used with common sense AND an motor carriers atlas. Period.

Does anyone that has purchased one of these units wish they had not?

Probably the biggest advantages of the 7700 are the larger screen size and the ProMiles coverage. We have at least double the coverage of truck routes and truck restrictions, which is pretty significant.

Regarding accuracy, I'll let other drivers comment on that.

Regarding lane assist, we are working towards that.

Our Engineers are aware of this issue and in the near future we will be releasing a software update to address it.
