Axle temperature sensor is mounted on the back of drive axle housings in the center where the differentials are and in the lower part of the housing so they are in the oil. The wiring harness might break right at the sensor connector, this happens especially when the wires are not secured properly on the axle housing. Or I have seen wires chaff against the axle housing, again because they were not secure properly.
