What do you do?
SHOTGUN: 4 chains and straps over the top.
SUICIDE: 5-6 chains and Xed straps on the top.
SKIDDED: Xed chains over the top, straps through the pallet and one over.
COILS: Chains+straps or just chains?

I like to treat every flatbed load like it is going to come through the sleeper and end me.Secure it legally and then see if you are satisfied. If not put some more on it.
-
Shotgun: Min 6 chains - 2 horseshoe, 4 cross. 2 straps over top of tarp or just over top if no tarp.
Suicide: depends on weight , Min 5 chains no straps
Skidded: 2 chains front/over skids - 1 front, 1 back. (skids are required to be locked down from forward/backward motion in addition to the load. The pallets MUST be touching for this setup). Then, depending on the weight and number of coils 2 straps Cross front coil(s) and 2 Cross back coil(s), 1-2 straps per coil(s) between (depending on weight), then additional strap front and back across face of coil(s) midway up.
There is no such thing as too much securement.Last edited: Jul 14, 2012

Don't put straps over a tarp, unless for some odd reason you left all of your gummies at home.

You didn't say how much weight or how many coils. I have picked up 14 coils two different times. The one time they were all lay down with the biggest weighing 9,000 lbs and the smallest weighing 1,200.
I only use chains on lay down coils, except in cases like the one above. One or the other, rarely both, on skidded. -

are we talkin bout wire coils or rolled steel.the wire coils loaded suicide would have one strap over/under on each end, then a strap through, back through, through again on each set of coils...rolled.,never put a strap on one.chains only.never had a custom fit tarp for it either so i put straps over the tarps to help hold it down.3/8 chain grade 70 is rated at 6600wll.5/16 is 5400wll.
CAXPT Thanks this.
