COILS: Chains+straps or just chains?

You're fine with that. We used to load those smaller coils tight together,put 2 chains on the front coil , 2 on the back coil and anything in between use just 1 chain. Not sure but i think the man frowns on the single chain approach in todays world.

I had an argument with another roehl driver about this the other day. He told me suicide its a minimum of 3 chains, I told him on coils under 10k I only use two 3/8's chains. He told me to look it up in the book, so I did. It said on a suicide style coil, its at least two pieces of securement and one of those is required to be a chain. So that's what I do. I just hauled a 5k lbs coil today and delivered it. Only used two 3/8's chains with ratchet binders. The back chain I make more of an angle toward the back and the front one I do more of a downward angle to help with keeping it from shifting forward and up. But it also helps to keep it from going back. So id say your fine.
Yeah I did the same thing, only id use two chains on each one in the middle if the coil weighs over 8k. But under 8k id do the two in the front and back and one in the center coils. I'm sure you'd be OK since the book says it's fine.
When I haul coils over 10k shotgun style, I use a minimum of 4 chains in combo with straps. Although it does depend on certain things. Like one day I had an 18k coil and only used two chains and 3 straps. For me it depends on the situation I guess.

Today at a coil plant, not sure on the name. Hey, I'm just a driver. I go in, load, secure, haul arse.
One of the company trucks pulling a covered wagon comes around a turn as I'm doing my book.
BOOM. That coil came right off. it was a 56k pounder, I got the same one. 4 cross chains, 2 horseshoe, and about 4 straps over the top.If you drove/drive for Boyd, you never have what you need. BECAUSE THEY REFUSE TO PUT BOXES ON THE TRAILERS! They also need a box on the tractor, lumber racks, more tire carriers, tire carrier on the tractor with a spare loaded, 68mph set so the dam truck will Regen, know what the hell they are doing to it in the shop, raise out pay per mile from 42 to 50cpm... ask any Boyd driver and 98% percent will say...What does Boyd say?Wow, that little box weighs as much as another trailer(No, I'm making a joke.)...DrtyDiesel Thanks this. -
The way you did you coil is exactly what I do to mine. Big coils I always load shotgun that way I can do 4 chains and 4 straps.

Sparrows Point in MD loads it suicide... Just throw everythink I have on the 56k ones they give. Any thing under that gets 3-2 chains and a strap through the middle.

CANT TELL YOU HOW MANY TIMES I HV BEEN IN GHENT KY..securing COILS,AND SEE THESES GUYS WHO HAVE NO CLUE HOW TO SECURE A LOAD..AND WHEN YOU TRY TO EXPLANE TO SOME OF THESE YOUNG GUYS THEY JUST LOOK AT YOU LIKE A DEER IN THE HEAD LIGHTS..WOW THEY GIVE ALL FLATBEDERS BOOKS..AND ASK THE VETS..IF A OLDER GUY SEE,S YOU GV A SH**..THEY WILL EXPLANE IN GREAT DETAIL...I ALWAYS ALWAYS OVER SECURE EVERY THING..& IM QUIK AT IT TOO...TARPING.
