It was my first coil and it was a pain in the neck. Took me 4 hours to secure and tarp it, but that was with a couple breaks in between. I know I'll get faster, I just want to make sure I'm safe.
COILS: Chains+straps or just chains?

I'm getting a trailer from Cofield and trucking it to Nucor, it's a 40 mile run. I'm gonna chain the axles, and throw 3 straps over the nose. Might chain the rubrails to eachother on the arch.

I need Les or somebody with experience to answer this.
I went to CRST Malone for securement training...the policy was 20,000 and below 3 chains .... 20-40 5 chains... 40 plus 7 chains
Ok my weakest point is my chain hooks at 6,600lb
I was loading a 43k lb out of Michigan so I was putting on 7...it was one of those places where everybody is in single file line and you gotta wait on the lead to finish...no chain area outside...so the driver behind me says where are you going Alaska? He then tells me only 5 chains are necessary he has the same chain hooks been DOT and never had a problem blah, blah, blah,... I am ok with 7 but I was just wondering...
Is this true? -
Yes you can buy permits to haul heavy coils.
That guy was right 5 chains would be sufficient enough for that 43k coil. You guys need to remember you only have to secure to half the weight of the coil. So many seem to forget this, but eight chains on a 40k coil is extreme overkill!SGTSmokdU and Clasix1055 Thank this. -
DrtyDiesel Thanks this.

I go by "there is no such thing as too much securement". Its what we were taught in securement training.
Personally I try to cover 100% or more of the weight. For instance I had four 5400lbs wll straps on two 3k lbs sheet metal skids. They were stacked and I tier strapped them. 28,800lbs worth of securement but I doubt if I wrecked they would come off unless the straps got cut by something.

Id rather do too much instead of too little.
