Things were a lot differant then but those guys that spacetrucker88 mentions from time to time were real truckers and wrote the book on steel hauling. Like he said 20 years and he never lost one. Most of you all wouldn't believe some of the things them guys pulled off, but I wouldn't either if I had seen them do it ha ha.

There was a lot less traffic on the roads back then too...not taking anything away from them but as you said it was different back then.

you may not believe this but we did not have a school or securement class we learned from the guys that were already hauling steel. My self I liked to haul coils inside of a side kit. I had it down to a science one in the front one in the back and a ltl in the middle and have a nice day

Goldie had an H modle mack at first. he used to go to Wierton and put on a hog load (usually never less than 65000)and come down 18 to 70. There was a big intersection where 50 and 18 met on a hill with a stop sign. Goldie said he would rev that old H modle up pop the clutch and sometimes it would go forward and other times it would go backward.

I wasn't with George they closed the door right before I started officially driving. My dad and two uncles were leased on for years dad started in the 70s with them and my uncles in the 80s. I pretty much grew up in George terminals, I guess I could say George Transfer provided my training in driving and securment and never knew they did. We lived in KY but Baltiomore was their home terminal, John Strker and Brian Gill were great to work with them.
