    (2) Inspect the cargo and the devices used to secure the cargo within the first 50 miles after beginning a trip and cause any adjustments to be made to the cargo or load securement devices as necessary, including adding more securement devices, to ensure that cargo cannot shift on or within, or fall from the commercial motor vehicle; and

    (3) Reexamine the commercial motor vehicle's cargo and its load securement devices during the course of transportation and make any necessary adjustment to the cargo or load securement devices, including adding more securement devices, to ensure that cargo cannot shift on or within, or fall from, the commercial motor vehicle. Reexamination and any necessary adjustments must be made whenever'
    (i) The driver makes a change of his/her duty status; or

    (4) The rules in this paragraph (b) do not apply to the driver of a sealed commercial motor vehicle who has been ordered not to open it to inspect its cargo or to the driver of a commercial motor vehicle that has been loaded in a manner that makes inspection of its cargo impracticable.[67 FR 61224, Sept. 27, 2002, as amended at 72 FR 55703, Oct. 1, 2007]

I have hauled many a coil, never would use straps on the coils themselves, 1/2 chains only. Now I would use straps over top of the tarps hauling shotgun.

    CAXPT Thanks this.

I always holler at a truck i see with a loose strap or chain, but I always get their attention and then tell them to take to a different channel so i can tell them off 19. I don't know what diesel bear might be listening or another company driver for their company and will rat them out...

    gator21 and CAXPT Thank this.

I've only hauler 1 coil so far, and it was a 49k laid eye to the sky because I picked it up at a wrecking yard because it fell off a truck and inwas taking it to a refinisher down the street. I have been contemplating loading some here tho, especially since I can get them daily out of certain areas that go right back to Chicago area. Which might help since I want to try to stick local if i can, just gonna have to get a coil bag I think...... and if the local thing works out, i might get a new Revolution of my own with a Fast-Track, but it will have to work out VERY GOOD...... and I may also get a van trailer to run locally since the rates for shorthaul van around my home are the same as flatbed !!!

You're correct, thanks for that correction. Autocar. I forget, I use WLL and it's not the same as the MBS. My apologies to Les2 and the board readers for the misinformation, but for safety sake, I prefer to use the WLL as the weight standard...just forgot my standards doesn't get to circumvent the actual language. :(

Yep, sorry for that, was being my usual excessively safety conscious self. Sometimes I forget my standard aren't the standards. :D

The cite you're looking for is here:

--§ 393.106What are the general requirements for securing articles of cargo?

    And this also:

--§ 393.102What are the minimum performance criteria for cargo securement devices and systems?

Clarification in Autocar's correction of my statement is the reason you had enough securement because you had enough MBS to hold the load. Sorry again.
