I've had my mind changed since this thread has started. I did buy some 3 inch straps to place I've a shotgun coil, but it won't be tight, my boss will have a come apart if he sees us doing that. The next time that I'm in one of our processors, I'll try to snap a picture of a "mushroomed" coil that was caused by have that strap across the top.

Reading this thread almost makes me want to start hauling coils
SHC Thanks this. -
Are you sure you are hauling Steel Coils? I have been hauling into and out of steel mills everyday and have yet to see a Steel Coil "mushroomed". Are you hauling paper coils or rubber coils maybe????? How thin are these coils?MichianaFlat and SHC Thank this.

I'm pretty sure the strap would break before the coil mushroomed.
I weigh in at 230 and probably don't have a big enough butt nor a bar long enough to mushroom a coil or break a strap.RERM, SHC, MichianaFlat and 1 other person Thank this. -
I let the DOD employees nail everything to the floor. They are real picky about how their explosives and ammunition are secured.O_M_Jeep, CAXPT and volvodriver01 Thank this.

First if I get a violation I won't lose my license because im not a moron and don't have numerous infractions.... Second as I stated I (we) do this daily .... You drivers that ocassionally haul a coil once a year can stress over the EXACT regulations .... The coil that I showed had yet to be processed it was not required to have a tarp....if DOT was worried about this they would camp outside of the mills and write tickets all day .... Funny thing is they dont...they know us know our lanes they could .... But they don't ..... I guess they are just waiting for .....??????

Like I said, your decision, your risk, not mine. I prefer to do what I can to keep my record clean and my money in my own pocket.

They do here in Indiana, mainly on 249 outside the Port of IN and Bethlehem Steel (arcelor) They been working it hard for the past year. I also see them chasing down covered wagons that are getting onto the toll road from 94 in lake station. Many times I've seen the officer walk up to the back of the wagon and lift the flap to see the coil. they like revenue here lol

I'm amazed how heated some of this thread has become.
It doesn't seem like a big deal to throw an extra chain to be on the safe side. I worry as much about liability as I do getting a ticket when it comes to securement.
Lawyers love to take cases where they think there may be negligence.MichianaFlat, CAXPT and Heysunshine Thank this. -
