Never saw a coil "mushroom" either. Heck they stack 'em 3 high - real heavy ones that go on the choo-choo trains.
Wouldn't they "egg" instead of mushroom? Unless you set them inside a big cup and squashed 'em.

Like post 10 times....
Someone understands it doesn't happen from a strap or chain over the top....
-
In order to have the full load rating as an anchor point, the chain must go completely around the spool or pocket.CAXPT Thanks this. -
Using the rub rail as an anchor point is asking for problems. On all of the brands of trailers I have pulled, every one of them has not rated the rub rail as an anchor point.CAXPT Thanks this. -
That is why the DOT allows us to hook a 5,400 lb WLL 4" strap to it. BTW, I did ask Fontaine about it, as that is what I pull and it meets their recommendations.SHC Thanks this.

Maybe "Egg" was the word I should've used, I've heard the boss call the 45000 lb paperweight many things since the driver delivered it. Whether it was weak metal, driver error, or act of God the fact still remains, that it's an odd shaped coil now that's collecting dust in the warehouse for now.

Then where do you hook your strap after you throw it over the trailer?
Time to start making some phone calls to the smaller fab shops in the area. Someone is going to love that coil. -
I would think the chain would snap before the coil would flex, and a strap would not do anything to it no matter how hard you tightened it. You have to remember that a coil is just plate steel rolled up, and about 2' to 3' thick.
I have a feeling that the coil was dropped or maybe on the bottom of a stack and the driver did not notice it was out of round, and the mill played him for a fool. That is also what happens when you are in too much of a hurry to pay attentionvolvodriver01, RERM and CAXPT Thank this. -
Just for clarification, a horseshoe chain on a shotgun coil is still considered INDIRECT securement. You do no lose half the WLL with a horseshoe pull.
-
Show us that reg. Until then, that will be considered incorrect information. The regs for securing coils has been posted and that was not listed as an exception.
