You're not alone. My husband is truck driving for the first time. He's graduated Magna ### Laude with his Bachelors & has one semester of grad school under his belt. He's planning to go back someday, but doesn't have the time for it now.

Well you feel how you feel. If driving a truck makes you feel like you're working below your potential or whatever, then you've got two choices. Find some perspective that allows you to feel good about what you're doing or find something else to do.
There a lots of drivers who have degrees and are perfectly fine with what they're doing. But I doubt knowing that is going to give you the perspective you need. It might be time to do some soul searching.DocWatson Thanks this. -
thats hilarious. your husband's honors got edited.

I got a B.S. in Criminal Justice from Rutgers Univ. and graduated ### Laude. Have a year of post grad in law school in Chicago before I decided it's not for me. Coming from the legal field, driving a truck is a big step up and from what I can tell people are happier driving than the attorneys I knew.
Years ago, an older generation, my parents used to say "get a college degree, get a college degree". I'm not sure how necessary that is anymore as far as increasing your income. Obviously it depends on your major, the job market, etc. but having a college degree 'these days' just isn't the same. I don't regret getting it but obviously I"m not working in the Criminal Justice field anymore and I still have student loans from law school. -
I agree with this. If you are thinking of getting into trucking but you are afraid you are aiming too low then I would either change my mindset or move onto do something else.
Some of us realize later in life than cubicle work sucks. Office gossip and the drama is not for us. Retail hours suck. Manual labor 10 hours a day sucks. And the fact that we are going to wake up, the same time everyday, do the same commute in the same traffic, see the same sights and experience the same weather is miserable. For me it is. It depends how you look at things, depends on what you want and what makes you happy. -
No matter what you are doing...if you don't enjoy your work, then you and those around you will feel the tension you espouse. You must do what you enjoy doing or you will be miserable. It's completely your call!

It'd be important to ask yourself whether you like driving regardless of your feelings about doing it with a college degree. You don't mention if you do or not. The fact that you feel like a loser driving because of your education tends to make me think you don't like the job itself either.

Have a BS and an MS and don't want a Piled Higher and Deeper (PhD). I will be retiring from my second career in a couple of years and managed to get a part time/summer gig as practice. (Bet ya can't guess my current job.) First job was flying for the Navy and there are some things that are very similar with trucking. I am doing it because it is what I want to do not because I have to. I have found there are some really smart people in trucking. While they may not be very educated in a school sense, they are very capable in their profession. They may not have had an opportunity or thought they could get the college education, but that doesn't mean they are not very capable people. As with any profession, it is what you make of it. If nothing else, it pays the bills now and you always have something to fall back on should things not work out in other areas.
Perspective is a wonderful thing when you are able to look back over your life and say "Wow! I did that." Whether that was planned or otherwise. Good Luck! -
Hey I got a b.s. from Towson University and after 4 years of struggling to find a job other than bartending, I ended up in a truck. Love it so far. Another year and I'll be hauling fuel I hope

I dont see trucking as a job.I have the freedom to work when I want to and stop when I want to.I drive all over the country and have seen things that many will never have the chance to see.I have a degree in criminal justice and worked in a correctional facility for 15 yrs. Before that I worked as a nurses aide, and a camp counselor.I got to the point where I wanted a job where I didnt have to deal with people unless I wanted too.trucking is great.I sometimes have had to use my skills as a counselor but I do that by choice. If your embaressed being a trucker you wont last long.
