You dont "obtain" a cdl, someone tested him, and somehow PASSED him and signed, as an inspector, that he was fit for a CDL. I'm my mind, that person is as much at fault as he is.

"In Missouri, it takes 1,000 hours of training to be a barber. I surely think a trucker would need that much or more.
Rogel is a Cuban-American from Texas. If he was even trained in Texas, there are no mountains there like the one in Colorado he was on. Do we even know if he realized what a runaway ramp was? Do we know if he had the ability to completely read and understand the road signs in English? If I was to guess from my experience the answer to a lot of this would be no. Did his carrier know his ability or even care? I would guess again they didn’t care. They just wanted to get the load delivered because they knew if something happened the driver would be left to take the fall.

We can continue to pass feel good rules and push technologies that would have done nothing to have stopped this terrible accident. Or we can take the bull by the horns and give the driver the knowledge and training that he or she wants and needs to make all our lives safer on the highways in America.

I can’t imagine how terrible this is for all involved. But we all know this young man didn’t get up that morning with any intention to hurt anyone. Yet he was left to take all the punishment for a completely broken system. LL"

Until the people training and passing drivers when testing for a CDL are made responsible for what they turn loose on the world, this will happen again. That's a fact. And with the "driver shortage" demanding more and more warm bodies to fill seats, and crappy wages making it hard to find qualified people, AND a steady influx of desperate emigrants willing to take a job, any job,....it will happen with more regularity.

How could he be fit for a CDL if he can't speak English well enough to read signs and communicate. He did not have that ability. Therefore he obtained it illegally.
Plenty of cases where examiners got caught for getting paid to pass the driver that wasn't qualified.
Or do you think bribery doesn't happen.

    I agree 1000000000000%
Who signed for it saying he was fit to have a CDL?
That person is equally to blame, if you dont hold them responsible, your just gonna get more of him, and with the big carriers lobbying for the age to be reduced, they will be younger, and younger. Why is that person not held accountable? Why is the bureaucrat that allows new emigrants that have no grasp of english just head off into the abyss to deal with it in their own? Especially for a safety sensitive job?
It's easy, the driver, and only the driver, will be the one to be thrown under the bus, he or she is expendable, there are millions flooding our borders as we speak, warm bodies, desperate for a job, willing to do anything.
YOU and me at the end of the day are expendable, dont think your not 1 bad decision, one brief moment of inattention away from prison in this environment. Make one mistake, EVERYBODY will toss yours or mine ### under the bus, and carry on. If you doubt that, you are mistaken sir, very mistaken.

Can’t speak or read English yet his company is sending him over mountain passes. The company should be held partially liable.
