You burn 200 gallons of fuel every single day? 5 days a week? What kinda truck you running?

 

I pulled flatbed for for a little over 9 years and never once purchased anything in your picture at a truckstop. Any of that stuff at a truckstop is there for someone who needs it in an emergency. When a place doesn’t move volume they don’t get the same purchase cost as others. Which is why places that sell a ton of securement products have cheaper prices than a chain truckstop. Just like buying a case or two of them off Amazon will likely be cheaper per item than buying 5 at a time at your favorite fuel stop that you can’t get a trailer into.

Full disclosure: Got fuel at Loves, parked at Loves, showered at Loves in McPherson KS today. Never once entered my mind to drop my trailer and go chase cheap fuel. My time is worth money too.

 

Nope. But they really should provide more parking for tour and Greyhound buses.

And maybe hire someone besides the diesel cashier to clean the showers. I really don’t care if you want to take one. I just want to pay for my convenance and go.

 

I took care of a gas station or two in my time. You will understand that the profit margin on gasoline out of the Baltimore Market is only a few cents at best and 8 cents on the other end per gallon of anything.

When you sell 7000 gallons of gasoline in all three grades for a average day, you will find that your profit is around 560 or so dollars. It usually costs tens of thousands to build a parking lot capable of taking on semi trucks.

 

You my friend are exactly what is wrong with this industry. Why don't you park at the cheaper fuel stop down the road? Oh yeah, THEY DON'T HAVE PARKING, JUST 2 PUMPS.

This is why I wish T/A, PETRO, PFJ, LOVES and any NICE independents (JUBITZ for example) would have all paid parking unless you prove you have bought fuel, or any other retail products to support where you park. Then people like this guy can go park at the dump where he bought his "cheap" fuel.

 

Don’t worry. Sooner or later he’ll pay for that “cheap fuel” with a $500 road service call to deal with gelling issues or $5,000 to tow and replace all injectors. Not a matter of if but a matter of when.

Always buying “cheap fuel” at unknown, run down independent truck stops is just like playing Russian roulette unless you’re local or regional and buy from the same outfits exclusively.

I do the same. But should I need to take advantage of overnight parking at one of the chains, I pay for the premium parking option. Still cheaper than paying the fuel markup.

 

I was a Pilot General Manager years ago! Profit is made in inside merch and food! Not fuel.. we were lucky to pull in a .04 profit on our fuel and gas... that just paid for the transportation costs.. the biggest profit margin was the deli area: coffee, soda, dogs, donuts, etc.. over 55% profit!
