I see so many people complaining about "this and that" when it boils down to the fact that they just aren't cut out to be truckers.

Thats one of the core problems with OTR driving. They ( Industry,Gov) have made OTR driving so undesirable, That it attracts people who are undesirable in any job situation. Just sit at the picnic table at a large T/S with a cold one and see what trots on by. The drivers I used to see when I started driving are becoming an endangered species. And it is the industry's fault that they can only hope for a bad economy or foreign migration to fill the seats.

Another blow to the ability to get good drivers starts in a week, with the new HOS. Less hrs a week to work and stupid restart rules.

I worry that the immigration issue will hurt driving careers, jobs, and pay. The gov. reports are warning of that. It's not just a field that's easy to get into with 3-4 weeks training or even no training for citizens... but for all the people that are illegal or children of illegals too. I wonder what % of these people are getting into the field. And what about a national union.. even in non-union states like FL... to protect pay.

I think one major problem is the misconception that driving is like a vacation. See the country, travel as a job, make big money. Another is, any driver that has been around since the middle 80's ( Me ) knows that drivers have taken a pay cut. Cost of living raise? What's that? I owned a 1984 International cabover and a 48' flatbed and hauled pallets and steel. Made $2000- $3500 a week after expenses. I prolly wont see that again.. Unless I can get a job at Wal-mart.
And to the gentleman that said we should form a national union.... We had one.. It was called the Teamsters Union and Ronald Reagan basically killed it.. It is now against the law for a truckers union to go on strike.. ??.. Go figure that that was the same time the industry went belly up..
Geese has it been that long? Am I really that old?? lol -

I just think all these immigrants are going to flood this field and drive down wages and benefits.
