If you get paid by the mile, how often do you get paid, how does the company pay you, and do you get paid mileage when bobtailing home? Any other pay info appreciated!

Typically you are paid weekly, direct deposit, and bobtailing home would depend on the company. Usually you are paid deadhead between loads but not always for home time.

Good question to ask. When I was paid by the mile, something which is the wrong way to go, I was paid 45 cpm by the first company. We arrived at that number because I was going to run the same run all the time and I would not do so for less then a set amount per year. So 45 cpm it was. Since that first job, I have refused to work for less. Now, I get paid the way everyone should and receive a percentage of the load.
One of the main problems with pay by the mile is that you are actually encouraged by that to run unsafe. Driving 75 pays more then 62. Backing, which is usually the hardest part of the trip, doesn't pay anything. They do not pay actual miles they have a predetermined mileage chart. So you are even cheated that way.
Once you get done with your first company, find someone who values your services and treats you with respect. JMOWild Murphy and chalupa Thank this. -
I will use my company for an example, we get paid weekly and of course get paid for the miles we run that expect if we are on a load and it does not deliver until after payroll cutoff. In that case all the miles for that run falls on the next weeks check. We do not get paid bobtail miles when heading home. Only time we get bobtail miles is when leaving the house to go pickup a trailer. As long as we are attached to a trailer we get paid unless we go out or route and it ends up being a little longer mileage wise.

How long would you suggest a newbie stay with a company such as US Xpress?

I get paid every Monday, deposit usually comes by the afternoon/evening. End of pay period is every Sunday at midnight. I get paid for all logged dispatched miles that week.
Headed home I get a load that drops near or in town, or I get a relay near by. I get paid up to 50 deadhead miles from final drop to where I lock up my truck during home time. Which is nice since I get paid extra for short mileage runs. I usually never bobtail home and my truck stays at the truck stop about 10 mins from my house.
In addition to my normal mileage rate I get paid extra for days I run east cost and NYC. Hazmat pay per load. Extra pay for short runs -400 mi. Pay per drop and pick up. And layover and detention pay.Wild Murphy Thanks this. -
most companies will want you to have 6 months to a year of OTR so at least that long but then again you may actually like them and not want to look for something else.Wild Murphy Thanks this.

I'd say do at least the year. USX isn't a horrible company though.Wild Murphy Thanks this.

Driving 75 does not pay more than 62. If you have a 1,000 mile load, it's 2 days whether it's a 62 mph truck or a 75 mph truck. Speed has nothing to do with pay. Not even close.

And the trucks arrive around the same-ish amount of time, while the guy doing 75 killed his fuel econ.
(incoming flood of messages why I'm wrong.)joseph1135 and tow614 Thank this.
