On the subject of the 98 VHP, I wonder if if it could be made into a decent radio by swapping the unmatched Chinese IRF520s out for matched EKL ERF2030s?

The 2030s are much higher quality units than even the "good" 520s.

 

Doesn't 2030s require some sort of companion component?

I don't think there is a direct drop in, some tuning should be done to the circuit.

 

Changing out transistors for different types almost always requires some form of circuit conversion and/or tuning, yes. But it should be able to be done.

Or, hell, find a matched set of higher quality 520s. Either way, Galaxy does it as cheaply as possible, with cheap components and no matching.

 

Chris in Ontario cali. Dropped 5 Erf 7530s in the 98v. I had and changed the board. Yes I said 5 the radio pushed 375 watts after that. No comments needed from a certain someone !!!!

 

375 sounds about right for 5 7530s.

If you could bias them individually it wouldn't be so bad.
Unfortunately on that radio it can't be done. When you find the sweet spot for one, you aren't even close for the other. Just imagine having to make 7 compromises for 8 transistors, and you can imagine how that radio is a turd.
You can't polish a turd.
