A compound setup is not needed, you are correct. There are trade offs for each system. Everyones situation is different and must weigh the advantages and disadvantages of each setup. I would disagree though as a compound setup gives you a larger range of useable rpm than a single and that can be useful in everyday driving. Is it needed? No.
I have seen different amounts of smoke from engines of similar horsepower levels. Our C16 with a single turbo doesn't smoke at all and puts over 800 hp to the ground, but I have yet to see a truck over 1,000 hp not smoke. Even Leon's truck will billow a black cloud.
