Computer needed for orientation and training?

Yet here you are. Laptop is definitely not necessary at first BUT after you get rolling besides info gathered at this most excellent site, google maps w earth views of shippers and receivers, access to company website for online training, job hunting etc.a laptop is virtually more necessary than all but gps, cdl and med card. I tether my SMART phone to my laptop and have web 90% of the time.

 

imo if you start doing your research AFTER you start training with your new company you already failed and you are clearly doing it wrong.

Research is intended to be accomplished prior to executing your next move.

The op's question was about orientation and training and i stand by my statement that if anything these devices get in the way. Once you are a professional have at it but right now for the op and i the focus MUST be on following the trainers directions and listening carefully.

Protip: part of the instructions will NOT be "okay son now log onto your laptop and watch porn for 45 mins" or "google me this"

I had a tablet and my smart phone. Tablet had it's own phone number, so even if wi-fi wasn't available I could still get on the 'net with it. I had the tablet b4 the smart phone though...actually I had it at "home" b4 we went OTR. I now have a Note III, that will do almost everything that my tablet would do.

Google map's was our best-est friend...lol google earth next. I still keep T/S's and restaurant's that we liked starred. We may never get back to some of them, but...they are their on my google map..just waiting. My husband has learned how to "drop a pin" and save for well's and batteries that he goes to, generally at the end of the paved road and begining of the "lease" road.

More than once google earth got us to exactly the right place, in a nest of warehouses that weren't marked worth a darn. I love my laptop, but it's not needed for school/orientation.

 

Again i am currently in training and i do use my laptop but its to watch porn at night because sleeping in a bed traveling at 65 mph is a pain in the ### and i require sleep aids.

 

Melatonin.... great sleep aid, it's what your body produces to help you sleep in the 1st place. Not the endorphin's that....porn can cause. Each to their own though. lol
