Yeah, in some locations we even use outside carrier long boxes for P&D when it's OKed in the contract - I guess we're always allowed to use CFI no matter the location now. If it's a line-haul load, we have it written in our contracts that we can pull their trailers for the freight to service. I've pulled Star, USX, and Western Express long boxes down the road in my Freight Sterling before because the freight would not have made service otherwise. It's pretty common anymore -pretty hard to scale with a single axle also..lol..

Yee haw. Gonna tow the company line starting monday the 8th. Kinda had to do the leg work on my background check myself since DAC/USIS/Hire Right couldn't find their arse if the lights were out, but managed to appease the corporate structure.Seems the freight pendulum must be swinging the non-union way. The local UPS hubs are cutting hours of the loaders due to lack of work/freight and the USF terminal has laid off those with less than 20 yrs. seniority. Meanwhile Fridley (MN) is putting on 8-12 and Eagan is putting on drivers also. Hope that means pay and 401 match will be restored soon. Can't wait to blend in and contribute, any maybe catch a bid job.

We definitely have a lower cost structure than most union carriers so they can afford to do what they need to do to gain market share. There has been a big push to gain market share since about this time last year and it has definitely put freight in our trailers. We still managed the second best 4'th quarter next to Old Dominion so our suits must know something.

Half of the pay cut was returned back in January but health insurance went up some - for some drivers it was a wash but I made out because I'm single. They remaining pay and 401K return is contingent on meeting a certain O/R for one or two quarters depending on what the ratio(s) are. Probably gonna be pretty hard to do with rates in the tank right now but the bottom line is the company is still making money which is a good thing.

You might do better than you'd think getting a bid job sooner rather than later. 85% of our drivers have bids so once you have 15% under you you'll get one. At a bigger terminal you might not have to wait all that long - your first time might not be great but it's better than not knowing when you're working. It varies by terminal, but generally you'll get a city start time before line-haul but I don't know anything about XMP.

    Good luck.

I called my local terminal here today, and the guy on the phone said they were hiring for linehaul night position. He told me to go on the website an fill out an app, and call him back in a week to make sure they recieved it. When I went online, there were no jobs posted for my area. (Lubbock, Tx) I called him back and asked him what i was doing wrong, he looked into it, and said to call back in the morn and speak to another guy in charge. I really hope this position is still avaible. I deliver grocery right now, and REALLY want to get out of it, but still make that kinda money. Gathering from what i have heard everyone else say, you can make 50 to 60k doing linehaul, or even p&d. Is this true? Also, I have a sweet insurance package and 401 at my current employer, I would assume Con-Way would as well? Anyways, I am really excited and hope that the position is still avaible, any advice or pointers would be great!! Thanks!!

No wonder why when we pick up trailers and we get error messages back, the response we get back from dispatch is "it says this trailer is in such and such yard. You can't be connected to it!" YOUR the reason.. lol.

    jakebrake12 Thanks this.

Freight doesn't hire for line-haul or city only. It's all one board and your seniority determines what you can get. That said, new hires often end up filling line-haul and run every night like I do as a bid driver. The web site isn't always accurate so you're doing the right thing if you want the job - keep bothering them..lol..

As far as the money goes, the Southern pay rate is less than what we make up here but they run a 70 hour log whereas we only run 60. I have no idea what you would make working down there in your first year, but a lot of work is available and I would imagine you could do 50K. Line-haul bid drivers up here on a 60 hour log make between 70K and 95K at top rate depending on the length of their run.

Well I called Con-Way back and the guy I spoke with the 2nd time, said that the position should be online, (but its not) so he said he would check into it and that was pretty much that. So I called him back a few hours later and told him that I had filled out an app for them a few months prior and asked if he still had it on file. He checked and said no, and this time told me he wasn't sure if he was going to need another driver at this time. But he said to keep checking, which is fine, but my question is, if I have to go on-line and fill out an app only when the position is avaible, why should I keep calling him to see if anything is open? From what he told me is that my app must go through the cooperate office to be screen before it even reaches his desk? I am stilll very interested in this company and what they have to offer. and more than that I AM READY TO GET OUT OF GROCERY!!!!!!!

Hello Jackbrake, sorry sending u a message without u knowing me but u seem pretty resourceful. I just started the training progam at xkc for Conway ltl my question is con-way a stable job, I hear they waist alot of money, is xkc a busy terminal and a good one 2 work at 2 keep working, so what I see right now on the dock freight wise I have not seen nothing yet because this isn't busy season, sure looks busy to me, but hay I just started 2 weeks ago, so if they hire alot of dock workers after they hired me if they started laying off would lay me off before under paid dock workers? U see Jackbrake I'm pretty shell shocked I got laid from the rail about a year ago, and the hired a lot of people hoping freight went up and older employees would retire, due to the ression neither happen and they laid off. I just hope Conway doesn't do the same because 2009 was rough and I'm trying 2 get on my feet in 2010. Overall I like the job and would love 2 work here but they hired alot of people in the last 6 months and I don't want a replay of the railroad. Cargill grain offer me position pay $3 per HR. than con-way but days and ression proof the position is a grain elevator operator. Oh ya I have a class cdl but haven't used I a long time so they put me in the driver apprentice progam to refresh me I guess, I am just bugging out is con-way really need a the people they hired, 2 got hired 2 day and they said they are behind me even though I'm in the apprentice program is that true?
