Just saw this..
We'd have it all like we used to man - terminals would have 85 instead of 60 runs.
You're not doing us, or yourselves for that matter any favors. We don't need truckload carriers to do what we do - we use them because it's cheaper.Marksteven, ThatTruckerFrom305 and ACH1130 Thank this. -
Gee, i cant thank you enough!jakebrake12 Thanks this. -
It's a little different here but the same sentiment - we just keep hoping they continue to get lost lost in transit and are a day or two late with our 50 bill loads so we can get back to basics. Our basics were on time and damage free service - we handle more with vans and they're late all the time so let's hope at some point we get back to hauling our own freight to improve service..Marksteven Thanks this. -
If I were to get on with Con-Way Freight as a dock worker, how hard would it be to get in on their driver apprentice program when it comes up? Would it be easier to get involved in that if I just waited to apply specifically for that program when it comes up or if I already had my foot in the door as a dock worker? In other words, does Con-Way give priority to people off the street as opposed to those who already work for Con-Way?

You guys missed my point. Most freight originates OTR, whether it gets broke down later or whatever. There isn't many things anywhere that didn't travel OTR at some point, just like you have to bring it to a final destination. I really wish there wasn't the animosity from freight to tl and vice versa. Most of the freight guys I run into have been cool, some of you, not so much. I'm sure you see it the same way.
More power to you getting up at nite every day and coming in hoping for a load for years, personally, I couldn't start a job on a maybe paycheck, as others have noted.
I have no problem driving any of that PA/NY stuff, as I routinely pick up in Watsontown PA and drive to Seaford, DE, through the Gap, not to mention Cinci, Columbus,Shrewsbury and others. I'm sure you'd be puckered too with 44,000 lbs in the box going across Cabbage Pass or Donner just the same...we all have our stuff that makes you earn your money. -

There are two instances where I get it and in a strange way am in favor of it.. 1.. It does cut empty miles to inbound markets like Seaford, De or Boston, Ma. I believe Boston is a 3 to 1 market for us so 3 empties are sent out to get one load back. Saves a lot of money to use sub-service.
2.. It gives us faster transit times on coast to coast lanes because it eliminates swaps and can move over the weekend - we have no scheduled operations on Saturday or Sunday.
What pisses me and other drivers is when it's used both ways. When we load 53' to Atlanta or Chicago at my terminal we're doing it because it's cheaper.
I'm really not trying to be an ###, but I chained over Vail, Donner, and across some mountain in Montana because I was a one year 21/22 year old OTR wonder that knew it all. Knowing what I now know it was stupid but I'm glad I did it. That said, the hardest most stressful trip I ever did in a truck was from Richmond, Va back up to Philly on I95 with 3K and an empty during the Snowmageddon.. Then second worst was that Sunday yanking 2 18K wagons back down to Richmond on 2 day old ice pack. I got stuck on a very small hill and closed down I95 at the 161 in Woodbridge, Va..
That's stress man..
