Is the indy terminal pretty busy? I am concerned after reading many posts that I might only be working 1 or 2 days a week.

Apply now if you can. Mar- Nov is freight season, so youll be working your tail off.

Dec- March is slow depending on where you live

Thanks CenturyClass, I have been really stressing over which company to go with first, mostly because I don't want to switch. I also want to work! The other thing that has worried me about Con-Way freight is I don't want to be a glorified dock worker 80% of the time and driver 20%. Not afraid of hard work, know I will have to pay my dues!

Well that's apart of paying your dues at any decent LTL outfit. You wont get the oh so sweet 500 mile daytime linehaul or the 400 mile night run. And its not as if they dont pay you for your time on the dock. I love the dock work honestly.

At my old term, Id work 5 hours on the dock, drive an hr, work 7 more hours on the dock and then drive home. Now its not so bad. But based on what Im hearing thats the model most are going to. Shorter runs and more dock time. It aint so bad.

Just start out, bust your tail and eventually you be up there in seniority.

I seen on the Co. website that CW will train you, work on the dock for 8hrs. and classroom for 4hrs. to get your CDL, has anyone done this & how long was it before you get a LTL driving position?

I gave when I worked for con-way, I made a thread about it. It's an easy class just that it's a very long day and you are not paid for class time

Yes I am. I just saw this now lol. I still like checking the thread out from time to time to see what's going on. I still encourage people to apply. before YRC I was looking to move to north Carolina and even thought about giving con-way a try there since every terminal is different

There's a lot of good posts here. Just one thought about ltl in general I'd add. You're not gonna get the best work, runs, or times when you first start out. I fully understand 15 or 20 hours a week doesn't cut it and if that's the case you have to move on to make make a decent living - that applies to every company. That said, if you are getting the total hours you need, you're much better off building seniority and working your way up the benefit and pay scale than leaving any ltl company for another. Even though UPSF is a much better overall job than say Pitt Ohio, I'd rather be 20 out of 60 at a Pitt Ohio terminal than 42 out of 48 at UPSF. Although I never had long stretches of 20 hour weeks, I had my share and it took me about 4 or 5 years to really make good money and get work I wanted. Good luck to all of you guys and I hope it works out for you no matter who you work for - ltl can be a really good paying career and you have the time at home to enjoy it..
