Hello all,
Talked to a local school and they said their main hire is Con-Way and explained that Con-Way pays for the training if you are "qualified" for the job.
Im seriously considering this if someone cant explain why I should run. About 2k of the school cost will be taken out of my checks over the first year. That doesnt seem too bad and there will be opportunities to go local or reginal after the first year.
There is no reason for why I wouldnt be hired as driving and criminal historys are spotless.

I would jump on that. Never worked (directly) for Con-way, but moved a lot of their freight and was always treated well. Ratio of content to unhappy drivers is as high as you'll ever see from a company that trains...

Thats what I like hearing!

well...the private school i went to (c1 indianapolis)charged me $2k if paid up front, then the company i worked for (usa truck) paid back 1200 of that over the 1st year.so it cost $800.
millis, if my info is correct, charges $25 per week over 1 year (contract is over after that and you are paid in full). cost over 1 year there would be $1300.
if you are referring to conway truckload, i worked for them and had no complaints. miles were pretty consistent, averaging about 28-2900 per week. the one thing id say to avoid would be team driving with them, and thats only because i talked to 3 separate teams who all said 5000 miles was a good week for them. though i guess as long as you had at least 4700 miles per week youd be making about the same as i did as a solo driver.
cost of the school sounds a bit high when compared to other options, but not as high as some. -
The total cost for school is 6k...but if Con-Way sponsors you, its 4k. They pay 2k outright and you pay 2k from your checks ($25 at a time).
According to the school, students going to Con-Way will make 26cpm for 10k miles (spent with a trainer) and will go to 30 cpm when you go solo with raises every 30k miles.
They have a 4cpm incentive for safe driving after going solo as well.
Basically I just want to confirm this jives with real world experiences of other Con-Way drivers or former drivers. This job will effectively double my income if I get decent miles. -
30cpm is awfully low even for starting out. Do the math, and don't forget to figure in taxes, ins, and tuition deduction. If you drive 2800 miles per week you will be lucky to net $550. Not nearly enough for the hours you will put in to get there.
Hooking up with a company to save on tuition costs is almost always a mistake. Do more research. There are better options available.BigByrd47119 Thanks this. -
Where do you live? If its close to a metropolitan area look at LTL and foodservice.

According to their website, it ramps up every 3 months and is 37 cpm at the end of the 1st year (not including 1-4 cpm safety bonuses & 5cpm bonus for miles dispatched in NE). That's good for a "starter" company -- especially one where you could conceivably spend your entire career.BigByrd47119 Thanks this.

Most of what I have read sugguests this company is the best for goung through companies...500 would be double my income, or really close anyway (netting 600 every two weeks right now doing security work!).
I want a year of OTR if for no other reason than to say I did it, but to be honest it just sounds like it will fit me well! -
3 cpm hazmat also, which apparently is fairly common.
