About that agility test, I'm a bit worried. Is there a way to find out exactly how strong you need to be?

I plan to attend either Sage trucking school or Crowder college by the end of Feb.; Have called Scneider Nat'l and Conway to see if they would consider hiring me (Pleasantly surprised, yes, as long as I pass school and boot camp). :)

However, Conway mentioned this agility test. She couldn't go into details other than squatting, walking around w/ weights, hopping in and out of the trailer, etc...

I'm a bit worried. I'd like to know in advance, before spending $5K for CDL school, whether or not I could pass this agility test. I'm 5'2", 100 lbs female, 53y/o. Normally, I'm very active and in good physical condition except that I broke my knee cap and tore ligaments last Spring, had reconstructive surgery in May. My leg is not back 100% (maybe 75% healed). I.E: I could not ski downhill today, but I could cross-country ski. I can walk, can not run. Up the stairs, no problem, but down is a little painful. I can squat, but not do 100 squats in a row.
Also, I can not lift 150 lbs and carry it across the bed, although I could have pushed it BEFORE the knee incidident.

Sorry this is long, just scared to go to school, spend all that money, only to find out I can't pass agility. They should make it a school pre-registration requirement - Pass agility, show you HS diploma, give them your money.

lelou, if you go to Crowder, you don't need the bootcamp at Conway. Also, Conway has a reimbursement program if you go to Crowder, but not for other schools. Chat with Christine in recruiting to get the straight scoop. She handles the student program specifically.

I chose Con-Way because of the student program. I liked the per mile training pay better, and the reimbursement plan better than Schneider. If it wasn't for that I might have ended up at Schneider.

I have a student in my truck now who made about $800 bucks last week. The companies that offer the flat weekly pay don't come close to that. He didn't make that every week, but he always exceeded the flat rate of the other companies.

    Check it out. Good luck.

Ir will be great to see you out here again. They aren't a bad outfit by any means. But, I think CWTL pays better over the first year. Ask recruiting how long you have to drive for elsewhere. I am thinking a few months, then go back to Crowder for a boot camp and then re-hire. That may get you up the pay ladder faster than spending a year at another company just to avoid the boot camp.

Does that make sense? If not, call me. Good luck, be safe. My prostar says Rooster on the doors so say hi if you seem me.

Thanks Roadrealtor for the advice. I did speak w/ Christine 2 wks ago. She was very nice but couldn't go into details about that agility test. I like the fact that one can attend Crowder school and not be obligated to sign on w/ Conway.

After some research, I have narrowed down to Sage school in Rome NY (not PTDI certified but in my state), Sage Isothermal in NC (PTDI and 168 hrs training), Crowder (not PTDI certified), and ROEHL school (would be fully reimbursed but w/ obligations).

Interstingly enough, my local DMV told me that if I get my CDL out of state, I have to wait 6 mo's before I can transfer it to NY state. THAT CAN'T BE RIGHT!!! I will ask again to make sure. If that's the case, then Rome, NY it is, although it is the most expensive @ $5200.00..

For companies, I'm leaning towards ROEHL, Conway, and Schneider. Although I prefer ROEHL, I think I'll either go w/ CFI or Schneider simply because they both have US AND Canadian based headquarters/fleets. I am Canadian (residing in the US), so I like to keep the idea of moving back to Canada w/out having to change companies.

The one thing I like about Schneider is that they seem to offer lots of dedicated regional routes, even for recent grads, where other co's want at least 1 year experience for these routes. So less money, but more home time...

I just started to read the PTD manual, so still in the homework stage. Also, my knee can't heal fast enough for me. I've been driving my daughter's 5 sp car to get more clutch exercise, but it seems to aggravate the knee, not make it stronger. If a std car hurts the knee, I can just imagine a tractor trailer truck! Bummer.... HIGHLY doutful they'd give a rookie an automatic transmission, lol..

I have been lurking and reading all posts here on this forum, and you PTDrivers are awesome!! So much helpful info that would take most newbies years of trial and error to find out.

So thank you all for sharing w/ us newbies..

Because it's COLD up there.. Brrr...

OK, I'll take your advice; Pack my bags and abandon my American husband and children. They better not follow me up there 'cause they're Americans (well, the kids have dual, so maybe they can)

PS: I pay my US taxes, don't take $ out of this country, I put it in.

OK, back to subject. No doubt Conway seems to be the way to go. Still undecided, but leaning towards Conway.

Do they? Or do they NOT have Canadian fleets? According to google, they do. According to the Conway recruiter, they don't.

Perhaps you good Conway drivers will know the answer.

Lelou, Ignore that bonehead...I could keep him busy for 3 or 4 weeks asking him to tell me the capital of scandanavia. It will take him that long to figure out its not a country! I got my laugh for the day, hope you had yours. My ribs couldn't take laughing for 3 or 4 weeks.
