I wanted to comment about the sitting in Texas with no APU thing. It's true with any company you can get stuck in bad areas, this obviously inclues Con-Way Truckload. 3 months sounds like a bit of a stretch, but I can't confirm that he wasn't either. I've been stuck 2 weeks in Texas before. I've also had a 3200 mile week without leaving the state of Texas. It's also true that not all trucks have APU's. I have a T2000 and my truck is not equipped with an APU or a bunk heater.

With this said, I idle my truck WHENEVER I'm not comfortable without it being on. I've never had anything said to me about it. Not even once. My MPG stays below 6.0 during the summer. It's because I want to be comfortable. They tell you to idle if you're uncomfortable. Maybe he just had a bad experience. I'm not sure. He could also be one of those drivers that never ever turns off his truck under any circumstance. You never know.

Awesome posts from all. I'm currently Active Duty in the Air Force and will be getting out next Feb. I've been interested in Conway for over a year now and I'm hoping I'll get the opportunity to get on with them. I talked to a recruiter the other day and was told that they are/will be hiring from their school in JopMo. I figured after 15 years in the Air Force I can put up with anything. Conway seems like they have their stuff together and if you take care of them, they will take care of you. Can anyone give me specifics as to what to expect or what I can do over the next few months to prepare for this new career? I'm willing to do what it takes to make sure I'm a great driver for whatever company I work for. :biggrin_255:

    Thanks in advance,
    Kevin

    Kevin,

Chat with your recruiter. Assuming you have no big rig experience and no CDL, they will likely advise that you need to get your CDL learner permit in your home state. Its a written test, probably on a computer. Then Conway will send you to their school at Crowder College in Neosho (near Joplin). That is a 5 week program. If you don't live local, the dorms and room and board costs $600. Tuition is about $3150.

Check with Conway on vet and tuition assist programs.

You will take your CDL at Crowder and will be issued the CDL by Missouri. Then it is off to Conway in Joplin for orientation. Then depending on your experience you will likely go on the road with a trainer (called a finisher at Conway). Upon Completion of that phase you move to your own truck.

If you are not a Missouri resident, you will be given 120 days to move your license to your home state. You will also be required to get Haz Mat. Get it after you are hired and the company pays.

So, study for the written test, get the permit, and then get with your recruiter about picking dates for school. That's all you need to do at this stage.

Most importantly, thank you for what you do. Be safe.

    RR

    Roadrealtor,

Thanks for the reply and thank you for the information. Do you work for Conway? How long have you been there? What type of truck do you have and how long did it take you to get into one once you were done with your training?
