Thanks to all of you for the great advice and information presented in this forum. I have been lurking for several weeks researching the world of trucking as a possible rookie driver. I am hoping someone with recruiting/training experience can give me some personal advice.
I am 56 years old and out of work since January 2010. I have been in transportation for the previous 27 years in the warehousing industry with experience mainly in shipping/receiving management. After hundreds of resumes submitted it is abundantly clear that my age, or qualifications, or salary history, or God-knows-what is not atttracting potential employers. I have only had three jobs in those 27 years, so I do not jump around.
After being responsible for loading and unloading all types of trailers and freight over the years, I am now considering moving to the other end of the truck. I have spoken with drivers and always tried to treat them as best as I could. I have always been curious about the trucks and the lifestyle. I now have the notion that I would not mind OTR as a final career. My children are grown and the wife is a school teacher with about 7 years to go until retirement. She could join me during her breaks if allowed.
I am not ready to quit working and feel that I still have something to contribute. Is this feasible for someone my age? My health is good and I have no blemishes on my MVR. I am also free of a criminal record. I know I could qualify for the CDL here in Georgia. I would like to hear from the pros if this is a pipe dream or worth pursuing.
thank you.
Considering career change
