I left trucking back in 2002. I started driving in 1994 and I went with Roehl right out of truck driving school. At the time Roehl seemed like a great place to work however once I got with the trainer I found myself homesick and left training. I was 21 at the time and it was my first time actually out on my own. I overcame my homesickness and became an OTR driver and as I said I drove up until 2002. I left driving because my wife at the time started sleeping around and was actually sleeping with the guy who owned the company I was driving for and now they are married. Needless to say it left a bad taste in my mouth so I decided to walk away from trucking for awhile. Since leaving driving I tried working in the funeral business but dealing with death day in and out was not for me. I am currently enrolled in an HVAC school however the pay for HVAC techs is pretty crappy until you have 10 years on the job. I would like to get back into trucking and I would like to go back to Roehl.
I sent in my application online and they sent me a prehire within 24 hours. The prehire thing is new to me...I guess that means they like you enough to do a background check. At this point I still need to get registered for driving school which is full until November. Should I wait to go any further in the hiring process and get school under my belt first? I know trucking has changed a lot since I last drove. I was 10/8 guy. I would normally run two trips from central Illinois to New York City and back a week and had Sat and Sunday off. I ran hard and enjoyed it. I never touched my log book until the weekend and that was just to get paid. That is not the way I want to run the second go around but home time is important to me.
I am considering either joining the midwest van regional or the 7/4 7/3 fleet. I would like to know if any of you drivers have any knowledge of the midwest van fleet. I have a read a lot of post about the 7/4 7/3 fleet and it is appealing to me but if I can make more on the regional fleet I might go that route. I would also like to know what division would be the best division for a guy who likes to go to NYC. I love the challenge of driving and getting around in the city and the people are interesting to talk as well. If the 7/4 7/3 get me out to NYC then the extra pay could help offset the extra time I will be sitting here riding my lazy boy.
I know everyone one this forum has more than their share of issues with Roehl and probably another company or two. I have been there and done that myself. I learned a long time ago that the grass always looks greener from the other side of the fence until you jump the #### thing and find that pasture has weeds too. The key is to find a pasture that has weeds that you handle.
I appreciate you drivers taking your time to read this post and thank you in advance for 411 you guys can provide to help me with my decision.
Be safe and if you happen to see my on the road in the future I go by Sourdough.
