No, that's the cool thing about sideband; you don't always need the amp on. It's generally 3x the distance line of sight, and good for skipping if you have the right antenna setup.

Are you talking about the sideband on the connex?

I have used a General Lee for the last 7 or 8 years. It has been an extremely durable radio. It was set up pretty good and I get compliments all the time on how clear, strong and loud it is. I keep the mic gain barely past 12 o'clock. The last time I had my General Lee in the shop and worked over was in the summer of 2006 when I was getting "feedback" on channel 19. Come to find out there was nothing wrong with the radio. I had a wireless mouse for the computer that the battery was low in and it was feeding back through the CB when I hit bumps.
It was out of the truck while I hauled gas. I used my 15 year old cobra 29 that I get equally good comments about. I have also had a Galaxy 66 with a 600 Galaxy pushing it through Striker antennas. I used to talk all over the continent with that set up. But one weekend I was at home someone decided they liked my radio, linear and passenger window more than I did.
I am currently exploring a new radio myself. Even though I know I have good equipment, I just want something "new". I don't even know about these Stryker, or the new Galaxy's. I will say I like the new Galaxy C.B. radios with their big meter. Any radio will "talk" if you have a good radio man set it up right. I just love these guys that turn it up all the way then swallow the mic and yell. Hey stupid, that doesn't get you out any further or sound good at all!Red Fox Thanks this. -
Why not ? most are generally really friendly and will chat
without acting like the ham-tickets you see trolling am radio forums.
When there is a pause in a conversation, just key up and tell them your listening and and curious as to their location,if one can hear you? they will call back to you.
I was running 95 to 70 out of Jersey last night
and their were several busy channels.I running empty so I dropped down on 68 and ran thru the hills to Ohio.
It was hard to find a channel that wasn't busy.
