Trying to get some information about Containerport. We are considering leasing on with them out of the St Louis Terminal. We currently have our own authority but life has happened around here and we need to be home daily. I currently drive with my husband but need to care for my Mom . He pulled containers in the past out of Oakland and rail out of Richmond so we are very aware of the equipment issues. Any information good and bad would be helpful. Thank you.

The rails and the steamship lines usually don't pay for blowouts and generally that falls to the owner/operator to pay for, even though many of these tires are junk 1000-20s. They normally will pay for peeled caps though. In the summer, the heat and heavy loads can lead to many tire problems, especially if you plan on going faster than 65mph. The entire deal is blatantly unfair but the rails and steamship lines are able to get away with it. I also know a driver who checks things out very thoroughly, only goes about 60 mph and he rarely has tire problems. As far as CPG specifically, I know of a couple really good guys who left there many years ago and are happy that they left. That was 10 years ago though, most of the problem back then was not making money due to poor dispatching. It seems like all these companies take out a deduction to build up an escrow acct for possible damage bills, a deduction to pay for cargo insurance, and other deductions as well. I hate to sound negative but in addition to all the normal questions you would ask, be sure to ask about the tire policy and the deductions they take out. Comtrak is another intermodal company, they are owned by HUB Group so they usually busy. You may want to talk to them to see if they are adding trucks and then you could compare what they are each offering. CPG is definitely not the worst choice if that helps.
    Good luck

Thank you for the reply. I will most definitely ask about the tires. I have already spoken with the terminal manager to get preliminary information and have concerns about 3 week hold back on settlements, not ideal and doesn't make sense to me. Already plan to ask for complete copy of contract to review before going further. Was also concerned about their ability to keep things moving, knowing that in the past poor dispatching was an issue for others gives another area to investigate.

I agree, three weeks does not make sense. You may want to check out another place or two just to get a comparison.
