What you're all missing is the noncompete clause in the contract. Crst will use that to sue whatever carrier you go to next if you don't pay off your contract.

Except there is not one. Even if there was, there is not a court in the country that would honor it.

Non-competes are for stuff like building a client base as a salesman, then starting your own business (or another company) and taking those clients with you. There also has to be remuneration involved. i.e. getting paid more for the clause.

No, stuff like non-compete and other scary words are just the companies way of trying to scare the driver into staying for suck pay. Don't fall for it.
Here is a quick primmer on non-competes...Is Your Non-compete Agreement Enforceable?

driverdriver, ExOTR, baha and 2 others Thank this.

Drivers quit CRST every day and go to other carriers while still under a junk contract. The only thing CRST can do is turn the debt over to a collection agency. In fact, CRST probably doesn't even own the debt; you probably signed with some lending institution and now they'll sell the debt to a collection agency for pennies on the dollar.
Put some applications out there and see who offers you a job. TransAm hired a guy that was under contract with CRST and so will other companies.

    DoubleO7 Thanks this.

when I went through there program 4 years ago they were taking legal action against the drivers and the companies that would hire them before the contract was up. Now I haven't heard much about that in the past year or so.

Not sure where you get he's starting his own company. He'll be an employee of crst and that does hold weight with non-compete clauses. He's not bringing his own customer's over or anything like that. As for remuneration, his contract clearly states what that is, that $4,000 or whatever price tag the put in it for his training that he's been advanced, not a loan. They even charge him income tax for that amount once he finishes his contract.
