The Viking brand officially went away in 2000, but they had actually quietly been bought by FedEx in 1997. Fedex spent the next couple years looking for another LTL company that covered the other states that Viking didn't, that's when they bought American Freightways. The merger of the two companies was then announced in 2000.

Was it really that far back? Wow I remember the American Freightways Terminal on Brookpark Road in Brookpark, Ohio. It later became FedEx Freight then they moved out of there it was torn down and it is now a Chevy dealership.

I drove one when I worked for Western Rock. That old beast was set up as a dump truck, with tag axles. If my memory serves, it was licensed for 125k or close to that, with the trailer.

I wonder why ford is not a player in the big truck market.

Ford sold there heavy duty truck division to Chrysler in the late 1990s and that's where Sterling came from. I know you can get the F-850 as a class 7 semi for like a beverage company.
