Can you please expand on how do i test with IR gun. I have the IR gun but what temperatures am i looking for and where and after how much of truck driving or truck idling? Thanks
The IR temp should reflect the thermostat temp(180-190*), if the thermo is stuck it would be much hotter, at the radiator, the outlet should be much cooler than inlet and mostly even across the tubes.. ... Philip
could you possibly expand on that? I think my head gasket is blown. Was that the only thing wrong or was the engine cracked anywhere? Did you have same as ever power or mpg? How long did you run before getting that head gasket replaced and what made you bring the truck in when they determined your gasket was bad? Thank you
the owner before me screwed everything up by running with bad fan clutch and constantly overheating the engine. I fixed the fan almost right away. now I'm trying to find and fix all the resulted damage. i use 50/50. I wouldnt dare to use water. sounds like it would cause too much damage compared to how much coolant costs
You need to get an oil sample analyzed ASAP, any coolant in the oil will show. also get the coolant tested for .exhaust gasses.. Coolant in the oil will destroy the bearings.. ...Philip.
yeah, i did oil analysis. just got the results 2 days ago. 251 ppm of sodium and potassium in oil. so yeah, got coolant in oil. I changed the oil since and used some Bars Leaks coolant sealants. Will resample in the next 7 days. Don't have the money to have a mechanic open up the engine. Not even sure the truck is worth the C-13 gasket repair... let alone inframe. Will have polaris analyze coolant sample in the next 7 days as well but Polaris can take months to hear back from I checked for bubbles in a water bottle with coolant overflow tube submerged. and that tube was bubbling good. truck mpg is good 7+ mpg. Power ok. I've never driven C-13 before but feels no less powerful than detroit 60 I forgot to smell the bubbles, will have to do that soon. I smelled the coolant surge tank but all i smelled was the coolant smell (no exhaust but maybe it was masked by strong coolant smell). Also moisture coming from breather tube.
Not a proponent of chemical fixes, but I can suggest https://www.steelseal.com/ give them a call.. I have used this and it has worked.... Philip
At this point my plan is to use something like this. I only used a little bit of Bars Leaks and the one mostly for radiator leaks and heater core leaks (which still helped big time). However, they have a special line of coolant sealants for head gasket seal. So next I'll probably flush the coolant and do a coolant sealer treatment specially for blown gaskets/motors like the steelseal. Could you give your story of what was happening to the vehicle and exact steps that you used to apply the steelseal? Also how long the fix worked for? Thank you
that much coolant in oil, I wouldn't even be driving it except to a shop. all your going to do is screw up the engine by continuing to run it. then what will it cost to fix? word of advise - fix it NOW!
