Dropped my tranny fluid and there was coolant in it. Its a rtlo18913a, with cooler on top of trans. I am thinking Im going to go to a air to oil cooler mounted up front, most my previous trucks had this and never had a problem. Any tips to flush coolant out of trans? I was thinking just filling with 50W driving for a bit then dumping and putting my 50W synthetic in?

well as a man who has flushed out 4 transmissions on leaky boats
all we ever did was drain fill drain fill 3-4 times
never ran very long between changes
everything up to temp be long enough

Just going to an air cooler up front won't solve your trouble I don't think. You should have some heater hose size lines that hook to the tranny with coolant running thru them

There is a cooler on top of tranny, 2 lines from trans circulate trans fluid through it. The cooler also has coolant circulating.. It is the only place the coolant and trans fluid can be mixing. The air cooler circulates trans fluid only, no place for coolant to mix with oil.

why not? I have converted all mine to an air cooler in front of radiator and never have had a heat problem. it will actually run cooler than a coolant cooler will.

jamespmack, grizzly and Chevyho Thank this.

another thing to keep in the back of your head. if you had a lot of coolant in the trans grease be ready for a trans failure. it may not happen if you caught it in time. I know of one instances where enough coolant got in the trans that it was pushing the grease out of breather. 200 miles after fix trans took a dump!

Yah hopefully caught it in time, thats why I want to flush it good.. Only reason i noticed it is because I dropped fluid to put a pto on.
