    Good Lord. 4.8

You know if the EPA were really concerned about pollution etc why don't they just give tax credits or SBA backed loans on APUs and gensets?

I mean if every OTR truck had one and they were each saving thousands of gallons per year wouldn't that make as much difference. WITHOUT all this nonsense.

The EPA does not care about MPGs. If they could get 100% CLEAN air out of a truck that got 2 mpg, you can bet the farm they would do it over night.

    When I hauled flat deck I drove 2 trucks-Kenworth 900B with Detroit 430/470HP,13 speed,ratio 4.10 it's averaged 6.5MPG and second one Peterbilt 378 with N-14 same spec's, same mileage around 100,000 miles.That beast averaged 4.8MPG.:biggrin_25510:

I like Detroits myself. We have ISX's and ISM's in our trucks. The fellow who order the new trucks with the ISM's was promptly fired after we got the first few. We get around 3mpg, on of our 60 Series trucks I got 6.5mpg with (Kenworth T-800's) The ISM's also are complete dogs, just don't have the power to pull hills at all. Personally I think just about anything is better then the new Cummins Engines.

At the rate we're going the 2010 engines will be at 2 mpg.

    are you joking or what?

comparing oilfield to on highway truck is kind of like comparing highway to city mpg in a car only worse, drive your car on a dirt road half the time park it run the motor half throttle in neutral a few hours then check your mpg

oilfield is constant stop & go, pulling trailers down soft gravel dirt or muddy roads, spending several hours setting, running at about 1500rpm pumping oil or saltwater on/off

imo 4.6 is pretty darn good

I think I'd have to go with the N-14. I'm sure you can still find some of those around with less than 250K on 'em.

i belive ya cmoore , seems every time they do something with epa...power goes to crap....millage goes to crap...durability goes to crap...and by 2010 cat will pull out the truck side of business as i understand and said in a few other posts...and the remaining motors will probly only get 2mpg as you say...and was a great point by someone else about if burning fuel was the hole reason behind epa...the payed for gens on the back of the trucks for heating and cooling would be the way to go...but as you see...they only care about one thing...helping the big man put the small man out of business as usuall...boy want they be surprised when all us o/o have to either parkem...or sell em cause we cant compete any longer with the high fuel price...less mpg...and the cheeper freight

Hey Brickman, that truck looks to be in oilfield or off road if it is 4.6 is very reasonable for that work situation.

Brickman I thought you were running cars. Now this tanker at 4.8. I am leaning towards a new Detroit. Those folks seem to know what they are doing unlike those other people at cummins and cat when it comes to fuel econ.
