While I personally don't think it's a good idea; because at the end of a long day you'll want to sleep comfortably- I thought it WAS legal to now sleep in anything, as long as it goes on line 1, not 2 for sleeper berth time??

If you know where to look, you can find decent hotels for around $39-49 a night.

    Really?

So what if I logged 10 hours on line 1? Can I drive again? Is there any regulation that says where you sleep, or even that you _have_ to sleep during your 10 hour break?

You're ignoring the fact that the driver could always take a 10 hour break, and not log SB. So the driver is legal to log line 1, but would be in violation should he / she choose to take a split 8/2 break. Right?

far as i know you HAVE to sleep somtimes you dont have to sleep for the full 10 hours. but i THINK you have to show if you slept in a hotel/motel if asked, otherwseid i THINK DOT can shut you down for up to 34 hours

Are you trying to circumvent the sleeper birth provision? The DOT has issued a ruling on it and you must follow the rule without exception. I don't recommend being non-compliant with CSA scores and subject to fines and penalties....but I guess you already know that, eh!

My brother had a very similar situation as yours a couple of years ago, hauling a specialized trailer with a dually that had no sleeper berth. His first haul from LA to Salt Lake City he pulled into the scale in Utah and got inspected. Since it was his first trip he was all good, but the DOT guy told him point blank that unless he could provide motel or hotel receipts for each night then he could be busted for violating HOS. He had been planning on sleeping in the cab with a make shift mattress between the seats.... scratch that idea.

The concept of trying to get better fuel economy by eliminating the sleeper berth is noble, but will ultimately get you in trouble if you attempt to circumvent the rules. Daycabs are fine for one day runs. Once you get into a multiday run then you need to get a motel or hotel...

... although for the heartier soul I'm wondering whether bringing along a tent, air mattress, and sleeping bag might work. Anyone have any thoughts about that?

    Moon_beam Thanks this.
