Yes Cobb Co in Ga had the DOT area built and they do still use it once a year for the annual DOT Enforcement DOT inspections. They also have a squad of DOT certified officers who can AND will give you any inspection he wants L1-L3!
There is/was also a freaking "truck enforcement advisory group" which is a bunch of regular 4 wheelers who took some kind of stupid course on what to look for on a truck and trailer and if it looks bad they have a "cert number" that they can give to the 911 operator which will get an officer on your 6 in a heartbeat as they "know" you have something wrong with your truck! This was a few years back in the late 90's and it really got the local drivers in an uproar! Me I had moved away to Missouri when they finally got it up and running!
Now,those signs you see along EVERY interstate from the state line till you get to Atlanta advising you to take I285 around Atlanta. Do it! The fine isn't worth the 15 miles OOR which is the MOST you drive which is if you are east or west bound on I20 and you have to take I285 going around the bottom unless you goofed and went around the top then you really are piling on the miles! (HINT: AM750) has the BEST traffic reports on in the area USE THEM!) The miles go WAY down when on 75 and 85!
The 4 wheelers LOOK for ways to hit you and sue you when inside the circle! I know I lived there and drove local for a little while! Also The Connector which is where I75 & I85 come together in downtown Atlanta doesn't have the same lane widths as the rest of the road system! They are narrower! Take your eyes off the road for a second and it's time to do a lot of paper work! Did I mention the fines? OH Yeah those measly 15 miles OOR aint worth it and you ain't loosing that much fuel! it's a pretty level ride!
I caught a channel 2 news story, the biggest truck bashing TV station in America, one day where they went riding with the state DOT boys and it was actually so freaking sad. Every trucker they put in front of a camera came off as some of the biggest fools I've ever heard in my life!
1) Oversized load, Driver actually tells DOT officer "I didn't see any signs saying 'Trucks must use I285" and the DOT's reply was "You know driver I've NEVER heard that one!" I ROFLMAO over that! Then the DOT shows the news girl the drivers oversized permits telling the driver to take 85 to 285 then the I 675 which is actually SHORTER than going through Atlanta! Over $3000 in fines to trucker AND his escort!
2) Female driver stopped and in front of the cameras she says "What? It's something like 60 miles out of route around Atlanta which I don't get paid for!"
I285 is ONLY 61 miles long from I85 where the markers start on the south side of town! I've actually years ago before they changed the exits to match the mile markers would bet drivers that would say that stupid line, for a meal or $20 and used to do pretty well too! I even made a few bucks after they changed the numbers! Oh the old days! LOL
3) A Roadway driver with a hazmat load in front of the camera says "Hell (beeped out) I don't know whats in there I just haul the stuff!" OMG! We ARE responsible for the load! ESPECIALLY a hazmat load! The DOT officer burned him a new arse ON CAMERA for not knowing what was in his trailer! I mean he ripped strips off of his hide! I always wondered if he (the driver) kept his job over that?
The reason TV2 is a truck bashing station, a DRUNK tuck driver drove his rig from Cowboys or whatever that dumps name was down by the TA the wrong way up 285 then got on I20 and hit one of their cameramen and killed him. The moron trucker NEVER showed any remorse about what he had done so now truckers have TV 2 and their helicopter to watch you! They buried his arse under the jail! He isn't getting out anytime soon and I could care less too!
Atlanta and the surrounding areas although not bad on the dock side like Chicago, NYC or other big cities but the police aren't dummies from the old Smoky and the Bandit days! The roads are some of the best nation wide but don't listen to the fools that tell you "oh I drive through there all the time" line! Yeah but they probably have a BOL for someplace inside the 285 corridor! Remember the line Smokey and the Bandit? Yes drivers back then HELPED each other. These days for some reason bad advise, directions are getting to be the norm and it's fun to watch someone get burned!
Just watch the DOT cops that sit just past the exits downtown for I20 at I75/85 as they pull out after that truck that just passed them! But he's saving that 15 miles! I'll let you figure out what the rest of the miles are now that they changed all of the exits to match the mile markers! You'll be surprised that it isn't as far as you think!
