I am thinking of joining covenant as solo driver after I graduate CDL school. Some Questions:
1. Do they do tuition reimbursement?
2. Is living near a terminal a good or bad thing? I live in Indianapolis.
3. Are miles good>
4. Is dedicated good or bad.
I am single, disabled vet small income from partial disability, capable of driving, hoping to make $700-$900 a week, hope to be home once a month for 4-7days to refill prescriptions pay bills play golf fish etc... is this even remotely possible?
any advice foe me would be appreciated. I have been reading threads on all the companies seems all have ups and downs I am easy going, ##### happens , murphys law, get the job done, kinda guy. US ARMY Infantry kinda gets you use to crap going wrong(never goes as planned)

- Depends on soooo many things (but miles are not spectacular)
- There are several dedicated. Some drivers like it better than regular fleet. I like my Walmart dedicated. But it pays less than regular fleet and it's a flat rate (no detention, no locals, no extras for drop & hook, nothing).
They give one day off for every week on the road. They don't give more than 7 days off.
Good luck.nadolap Thanks this. -
$700 a month??? or a week?
-
I'm sorry, I meant to say a week...
My bad...
However, I've heard solo drivers running regular fleet last year, complaining they were making less than $300.00 a week.
Teaming is mandatory for the first 6 months, if company determines you are a new inexperienced driver.
And trying to find a good team partner that will help you to run good miles and make sufficient money is the most difficult part.
Good luck. -
hello! well I got me a new co driver.
Monday 3/5/10 and got a load out the same day. only 117 miles but a run, a heavy load 79,786 Pd's.
That's the heaviest load yet I've have pulled. Boy she was heavy. But not that bad, got it there dropped it
the next load down to ft worth TX, waiting on a load going to going to pa.
My new co driver is a little corky but is laid back a little. He has trouble shifting gears. and saws the steering wheel a little. Kinda sounds like some one i know. ha!ha!
He has no wife no kids and no bad attitude. Yet. But we'll see what happens.
I'm taking it one day at a time. Trying to get this 6 mouth thang over with and move on. Hopefully to make way better money.
This 14 cent a mile is killen. So far I'm stuck in the $600 dollor range a week. Hpoefully with this new co driver and new dispatcher we can break out of that range and start making money.
I can't save right now. Every thang goes out. With this going on I not going to be able to go home any time soon! Which thats not what my family wants. But It is what it is.
Truck running good. a/c works now. waiting on loads keeps our idle time high.
Well had to check out the a/c.
Today in TX there is a breeze and alittle chill in the air. That should make covenant happy. I what get start on this idle time stuff. I thank you know how i feel about it.
Will see ya soon going to shower and eat at the ihop. thanks guy,gals.jtrnr1951 Thanks this. -
I can tell you its going to be a little while before you go solo.
After school you got to pass all the all the little test they give you there, driving, blood pressure, eyes, Be able to do a little physical bending, stooping and lifting.
Then you go with a trainer for 35 driving segments which could be 35 to 40 days.
Now the pay has changed. It used to be 13 cent a mile. Now i thank its 350 dollars a week until you are done with training and then its 14 cents a mile
After the upgrading test. driving, backing, smith system and pro treads. Which are just watching training video.
I posted the pay scale on a later post on pay. just go back and check it out if its still there. If not let me know and I'll see what i can do. It may take a day or three to get back because if we are running that's what I'll be doing. running.
I can't wait until after this first three months is up I get a penny raise. Ill be making 15 cent a mile Yea!! Then 16 cent after three more weeks. Then 17 for one year as a team than 2 years i get a half a cent raise.
I all ready knew this and I can't complain. and even this forum try to tell me. This is a job i took when no body else would.
I'll get my time in and we'll see what going on from there. Its not that bad of a job really. Covenant has not tried any fast one's yet!!! Every thing is on the table so far.
The people are nice and pros. The truck are nice. I have a 2009 Columbia and covenant is getting new trucks in every day. Cascades and pro stars.
Not a bad place for a young person to start. Well got to go and do some scrub en and bubbles see ya.jtrnr1951 Thanks this. -
well we been running a few 600 mile and 1200 loads. all on the east coast.
alot of run, drop and wait. Or run wait to be loaded then run then wait to be unloaded.
At the pay of 14 cents a mike this is killing me. I feel like we are running solo miles. Because there is enough time to deliver.
My new partner is ok and trying to be a good partner. Still have some problems with his driving. But is willing to listen to do it better. Stuff like braking to hard. Not able to down shift with ouit griding. And lane control.
I,ve been talking to him and to see how he does thangs or or was taught to do them. And that seem to be the problem. Its how he was tought. But is will to work on them. thats great.
He is a little corky and he has started to learn to play the gitar. He knows afew songs.
He bought me dinner the other night. That was cool. Amd does try hard to get right. HIS attuded is a 100% better than my other co drivers and that is really all i can ask for! right now
I need to run!!! Cant wait untill I get my time in so I can make some money. Thanks guys and gals see you so. -
will still sitting at a pilot in savannah,ga. BEEN SITTTING HERE FOR 10 HOURS.
-
Made a empty move to savannah, ga from salisbury nc were we dropped a trailer.
Then made a bob tail move to pick up empty trailer in sacannah,ga at a target warehouse.
To keep us off the overlay pay which is a $50 for each driver.woopy!!!
So we ran a the bob tail 240 miles at 14 cent a mile. Now that just not right.
I woke up to 7 covenant team trucks in the pilot this late morning sitting also.
This is not to be the slow part of the year, But at least I know there not picking on me.
I know covenant gets loads out of here in savannah,ga. As for me we made only $45 this whole weakend.
Well we are talking about covenant. I have been told that many times my this forum.
see what happens later thanks!!!!!!!!!!! 04/11/10jtrnr1951 Thanks this. -
Glad to hear you and your partner are doing well with each other. And now you will be his trainer for a while, huh?
Hopefully he will learn quickly and you will not need to worry about his driving, etc.
About the miles, I and another friend of mine who is also in the Wal-mart dedicated division at Covenant have been experiencing a decline in miles.
We don't want to move to another company right now cause companies have not been hiring much, I heard miles have not been great anywhere and this Wal-mart dedicated is a very cushy place to be right now. Besides that, our dispatcher couldn't be better and that's a hard thing to let go...
Hang in there man...big wheels Thanks this.
