Don't get your CDL through a company. The school we went to charged us $2,000 and its nice to have the freedom to switch companies if the first one we went to turned out to be a nightmare. This industry is very unpredictable and you don't want to get into some situation where you have no way out.

Another deciding factor for us was proximity of a terminal or drop yard where we could park our truck to our home. This cuts down on having a long drive home. Plus, we put the truck in the shop while we're on hometime for any needed repairs no matter how small they may be. This cuts down on the risk of breaking down far from home.
Truck driving is an experience in addition to being a job. This is especially true for husband and wife teams. That's why I think its important to go with a big company that can get you anywhere in the country. You can vacation anywhere easily. Major carriers get discounts for hotels, rental cars, etc.
There is a lot to learn in this job and when things go wrong....its nice to have the support network a major carrier has.dennisroc Thanks this.
