    thirdreef,

I am in the design process of having Cozad build me a trailer for the CA market but also useable in OR and WA and other states that don't recognize a 16 tire.
What type of trailer would you use to move a CAT 336E or D8 from CA to OR?
Im sure you probably run a 16 tire being so close to CA and NV recognizeing it but it doesn't do you much good in OR / WA as they don't recognize the 16 tire only as a 2 axle trailer.

Murray trailers has a 16 tire with a flip axle. It's on their web page. I bought the proto type that they had built originally. The weight on the trailer was about 17500 with the flip. With the flip down you were 48 ft over all. Flip up . Center rear axle to center of kp 40 ft for secondary in California. . It was was shorter than most other trunnions . It was something like 60 inch instead of the 70 I got in calif something like 58640 on 16 tire. In OR with flip 60,000. In California you can either have a 3 axle with a 20,000 front end so 20 plus 46 plus 58 gives you about 124,000. Or a 4 axle set up.. The only legal 4 that I know of is to have all the same suspension .. He was less than the 10% . If you need any more please call me at Jeff. Sorry I could write a book on this.

    Thanks for the info Jeff,

It is truly amazing how complex yet contradictory the regs are on heavy haul, especially California.
That Murray sounds nice but I have an idea that hasn't been built yet that should work well.
Here in CA you can actually get an annual permit up to 22k on the front and 46,760 on the drives, then either a spread 16 tire or a 3 axle with 60" spacings will give you 60k on the trailer.
My annual is 20k front, 46,200 drives and 55,243 on 16 tire legal width or 60k expanded.
What length bed is your Murray?

It was with the long neck and a 22' 10" deck. From the back of the neck to the bottom of the rise in back. The big thing is the 48 ft in California. Plus when your empty... You over inflate the airbags on the booster and run just on 4 tires saving wear and tear on the 16 tires.. And you don't get the bounce running empty with not much weight. The booster would have like 8,000 on it. Tell Kurt hello at Cozad.. I've known him for years. Yeah every state is a little different on what they want. Like the 16 tires. Murray went to a big meeting with all the state DOT. He proved to them that a 16 tire has less road wear and tear.. They all agreed that he was right.. And here we are today. Two reasons they don't want 16 tires.. You can't drive over an inspection pit...and some states have 10 ft wide scales.. I found that in Illinois and Oklahoma. If you go to Arizona. I've heard you can get 60 on the 3 axle.but at the port I've only have gotten 52 some with 54" 53 some with 60" . Now with that trailer that I had.. They would give me 62,000. It's just where you want to go. Like North Carolina 12,000 on a 425.65-22.5 as some states are less than what you want. Iowa, and Nebraska is 20,000 per axle.. So if you have a 20-46-60 your over weight. Then there is Colorado that doesn't recognize a 16 tire but gives you something like 54,000 on two axles.. Wyoming is about the same. Yes it can be a real pain in the back side.. I'm glad that you hire OE operators ..
