Many years back I was talking with Oregon Motor Carrier Division about private usage of a semi tractor. I had read the statutes, but had a few questions. One was about the decals I often see "Private. Not for hire". The rep said they mean absolutely nothing. If anything, they may attract the attention of certain troopers. Moral of the story, decals, cameras and anything that may indicate to the opportunist that there is something inside with enough value it needs protecting, may have the opposite effect it was hoped for.

I didn't think about that with the stickers. Yeah that could backfire. It's funny and ironic the more you try and make your truck secure the more they'll think there's something in there worth stealing. Screwed if you do screwed if you don't. So yeah try not to keep too much stuff in your truck worth stealing and carry a backpack to put it in when you leave if you do.

I don't know how they did that. I'm assuming they put the tracker inside the box otherwise the thieves would see it I would guess.

The Future of Truck & Trailer Parking!

I found this place for parking,I'm parking here when in Houston.Just off of 610,McCarty Street.Exit 24.Theres a string of truck stops and all types of service shops,parts,chrome shops,everything on McCarty.This lot is about 2 blocks off McCarty so it's quiet.
They will text you a code for the gate after you book a spot,then they send you a link you can open and close the gate with the app.

Don't go up Banner drive to the lot,not a truck friendly street,go up business 90 just past the TA and turn right on Old Spanish Trail,straight shot into the gate.

McCarty is an infamous high theft area. That's why that lot is gated. It might not be enough though. There is, or at least was, a Swift yard down the street and around the corner when I worked for them. The yard had a policy of requiring a pad lock on every trailer in the yard, even the empty ones.

Few things you can do to help mitigate it.

Most obviously is park in a better place. But if you cant or wont for whatever reason you have several steps you can take with varying degrees of cost and effectiveness.

First if your truck is like mine there is always a way to get in and unlock the door with like a coat hanger or something or some unintended hack that takes like 3 seconds. Mine has a hole by the hood you can stick a hangar or something up into to tap the unlock button. I welded a peice of metal over that and a couple other common ones on mine so you cant get in that way without ripping stuff off which is loud and obvious. You can find most of these methods on your social media platform of choice. You can also go to your local police and/or locksmith explain the situation to them and ask if they know any common ways to break in and what you can do to prevent it.

Next rekey your truck. Most semis nowadays are on one of a very limited set of keys and use very generic locks from the 40s that can be bypassed in under a second often with bloody youtube guides on how to do it or places like amazon flat out selling the tools to do so. My own lonestars locks could be opened with any number of stupid things in seconds when i got it. Hell i could pick it open with a plastic pen cap myself. Hell there was a tool on amazon that i got that unlocked them like a normal key. Also unlocked my buddys jeep truck and started his loader so....yea

Paid a locksmith to entirely change out the entire lock assembly to something a lot less easy to pick, bump or jiggle and put a block in over the physical mechinism so its #### near imposible to shim without ripping the door apart. Cost a pretty penny but gives me a discount on insurance that will pay for itself in a year or two. Did the same thing to my pete and any competent locksmith can do the work. Wont stop a truely determined thief but the tools to open said lock without a key are pretty #### rare and most theives move on to an easier mark pretty fast.

Next get some shatter proof film also known as security film for the side windows. Again it wont stop someone from smashing them but it will really slow them down and make a LOT of noise to get through. And someone smashing windows with a crowbar is going to cause a lot of people to call 911 really quickly. A truck alarm also helps as it will bring a LOT of attention to your rig bonus points if you connect it to the airhorn. If posible having inside rear and front faceing cameras with offsite recording also helps. If you really want to spook them you can invest in something like onstar that will have a live human telling them the police have been called and if you have cameras tell them their faces have been recorded or something.

Futher you can invest in locking hood latches. It secures your hood shut and makes doing any number of things to your rig or taking things like the ECM off it much harder. Not all truck brands have them but they do exist or can be made by a compitent machine shop. Once again expensive but effective.

Finally changeing out the screws or say investing in some type of securment like a band to go over the CPC, ECM and physically secure it and further slow them is a good idea.

As a last line of defense having critical psrts laser etched with a serial number is a good way to catch a rather large number of these lowlifes after the fact.

Sadly with thieves shy of owning a doomsday bunker with a bunch of pissed off very twitchy marines armed with large cal belt fed muntions and orders to kill anyone not YOU that gets within 50 feet on site guarding said site that you can park in. Well the best you can ever do is make stealing your #### such a pain in the ### or so attention drawing the thieves go elsewhere.

Of course there is always the risk they decide to vandalize your truck for revenge or just dont care and absolutely destroy your rig getting what they want. But thats a thing that happens already where some destroy the truck anyway just to be ########.

But do all the above and insurance will at least cover anything that this fails on and they will ward off 95% of theives even the more mid and upper range ones since theives tend to prefer low hanging fruit.
