Practical miles= The total miles of the trip, using the most practical route. This may not be the shortest route, but it will be the best route using good roads.
Rand McNally miles= I think this correct. This is the shortest route to your destination. It does not look at Truck Routes, and will take all kinds of odd back roads to get you there the shortest way.
Anyway.
I am still working for Central Refregerated. I am a company driver, and I will never sign one of there leases, it is just a really bad deal for the driver.
The company loves these leases though.
1. Driver makes all payments for permits, Plates, Insurance, Truck, Fuel, Ect.
2. When driver is done with there lease, or turns the truck in, the company now possesses the truck again. Very rarely will a driver buy the truck at the end of the lease, because the buyout is about what the truck is actually worth, or more.
3. The driver pays overmileage on the truck. If the driver does not buy the truck at the end of the lease all the overmileage money stays with the truck. This money will not pass on to the next lease opperator.
The next leasor will also pay overmileage into an acct.
When the truck hits around 580k miles the driver will be asked to turn the truck in to get traded.
Once the driver turns the truck in the company has access to all the over mileage accounts on that truck. They use this money to fully purchase the truck from the leasing company. Now that they own it they can "trade it in" or sell it.
Thus the company has a truck that they own fully and they never paid a dime for it. They will sell it for top dollar and make allot of money per truck.
Most of Centrals Lease trucks are Kenworth T-2000s and W-900s. And they are all 2005 or newer. All trucks are fully inspected and any shortfalls must be paid for by the last driver that leased the truck.
In the last month Central has sold at least 75 of these trucks, all for top dollar.
No thank you leases. I will buy my truck myself.
I have noticed in the last few months more and more drivers are doing just that. They will lease back on with the company with a used truck that they own. This is a much better situation for the driver. They will usually have a truck payment that is lower than there lease payment was and it is there truck.
I have not had many problems being a company driver at Central. It is very appearent that the lease drivers get the better loads, but I am still getting over 3000 miles just about every week.
I am still looking at going to a more local company in the near future soon though. My wife really would like to see me more often.
Take care, and have a good trip.
