Good morning folks - During a pre-trip inspection, our driver spotted a crack on the driver side of the drive axle assembly. I’ve attached a photo for reference.
1) What exact part is cracked here?
2) What’s the proper way to fix it — temporary vs. permanent?
I called a few mechanics and most of them said to just weld it for now and deal with it properly once the truck is back in California. They didn’t seem too concerned but I’m not fully convinced that’s the right call given it’s a structural component.
The truck is currently loaded in Erie, PA headed to Dallas, TX and then back to the Los Angeles area. I don’t want to risk anything unsafe in the meantime.
Appreciate your input from anyone who’s dealt with something similar.

Take it to a reputable shop and replace it. Don’t mess with brakes!

That is called the brake camshaft tube, manufactured by bendix. Most dealers carry them. You just need to specify which side, as they are different. Welding is a perfectly acceptable fix to keep you moving, should be done carefully though, as the tube is filled with grease. It can boil out and get messy if you put too much heat to it.
Oxbow and Deezl Smoke Thank this. -
S Cam assembly or what it mounts to is broken. Looks like a pretty nasty gouge in the brake drum also from where the broken parts were rubbing.
Could also be a broken outer axle.
It should go to the shop immediately, may want to consider towing it. Be prepared to re-power the load with a serviceable tractor. -
Oxbow Thanks this. -
Good job on this person noticing that! -
Give them a raise201, TexasRiverRat and Blu_Ogre Thank this. -
Seen a few broken or bent over the years. Had one break completely and when the driver hit the brakes it torqued up and smashed the diff oil filter clean off the housing.
Pretty easy fix. If you have enough room you can slip it off and you won't even have to pull wheels.Oxbow Thanks this.
