Ah. Well, in my case, utilities are already in place. If I were building in a remote location, I would have a solar setup put on the roofing, and preferably near a water source. For years at the cabin, we used a hand pump to get a bucket of water to flush the toilet, and jugs of drinking water were carried in.

No, I'll be tearing down the ancient log cabin and rebuilding. Containers with log-look siding, and a traditional metal roof, except no wood outside the container itself. Steel roof trusses, since the only thing it needs to support is the roof itself.

My father in law may or may not have a series of conex containers that he's bought and placed on his wooded property over the years. In total he's got about 1500 square feet with enough room for all 5 of the families for when a shtf situation. They are set up with an independent water well with a rain water collection planned for later, a 15kw propane generator, with solar power back up batteries and plans to build a small 5kw windmill. I helped him set his most recent. A 30ft container he bought for a work shop and to house his gun safes. Everything is connected to each other in a hexagon pattern with the work shop set up on the center. We've still got some time to go as the insides still need finished. The propane tank, generator, well and rain collection tank are set inside the boxes. Needless to say he's sort if a prepper, when he's finished it'll be used as a bug out spot/family camp. He's already got a 5 acer stocked fish pond just to the north of three buildings. 20170711_011423.png

    Here's a mock up
