I see what you're saying. A measley 1% doesn't mean squat if you're carrying a balance at 24%.
I only use mine for monthly bills and things I'd be paying cash for anyways. May as well get the perk.
The #### would have to seriously hit the fan to put me in a situation where I'm carrying a credit card balance these days.

As others have recommended Capital One Quiksilver is the card I got. The cashback program is simple and it's really just a backup/build credit history card for me.
Another major perk for me is no foreign transaction fees (I run a lot of Canada). Something to look for if you travel internationally. -

Check this out OP. Good website. I personally like the American Express Blue Cash. They are VERY generous with their credit limit and the rewards are great. -
Credit union visa, $10,000 limit at 7%

I have found this to be an old school line of thinking. I use American Express for everything, everywhere. Been a long time since I came across someone not accepting it, usually a small mom and pop bed and breakfast inn or something.
I use the Hilton Hotel point system, haven't paid for a hotel stay in years. -
American Express. Member since 1995.
I still have a Visa card that I opened in 1987 but I like the Amex better.
