Just got off the phone with a Schneider recruiter. I was answering questions about my criminal history with her. My most recent charge was a dui in 1999. Prior to that I had several other misdemeanor charges, including marijuana possessions. I told her about those and she asked if I remembered how I got those charges. I told her I was pulled over in my car and had the marijuana on me. She then told me that because I had 2 charges involving a vehicle Schneider was unable to hire me. So a few questions:

Do I need to provide info about arrests or just convictions?

Should I give any details or just say I don't remember?

Could I talk to another recruiter or have I burnt that bridge?

I thought that being completely honest and forthcoming would be the best route but now I'm thinking I should only provide the bare minimum of information...

Just answer the questions on the application honestly and completely! Don't answer what is not asked either.

It's ALWAYS better to be rejected over the phone while at home, rather than 1000 miles away sitting in orientation...especially if that's after going through school with a 1 year contract hanging over your head that will now have to be paid with money you don't have.

If you're honest with the company, there should be no surprises. If you omit things from your past, especially if they'll turn up with a simple background check, you stand to lose a lot more. Even a fully qualified driver can be dismissed at any time for cause if it is found out that they lied on their application.

I have no problem being honest, I'm just not sure how much detail I need to go into. She didn't seem to have a problem with the actual charges, just the details about them. I just underestimated how much impact some 20 year old misdemeanor charges could have.

Forget Schneider; too late for that company now.
Plenty of other companies will hire you since the charges are so old.

She would find out anyway when they do a background check. She's just checking to see if you're truthful.
Read the questions carefully and don't give information that isn't asked for.
Watch the wording in the question:
    Have you "ever", blah, blah?
Have you "within the past 5 years", blah, blah?

    One simple Rule.

    NEVER VOLUNTEER INFORMATION.

    Example.

Sitting in the doctor's office during DOT Exam, blood pressure machine shows a touch high and a fast pulse indicative of early heart failure (Which I actually have)

Doc ask me wadsamatta with you. You sick?

Oh no.. Just some coffee and them jalapeno omlette out of louisiana this morning (If I am sitting in Shreveport trucking INC for example)

    Oh.

NEVER volunteer information. If the doc is suspecting I have heart issues, he has to send me to a heart doctor on a referral and a three month DOT medical card. (Which means you have 90 days to fix the problem you might not get another)

That is one example of never volunteer information that you possess. Make the other person get it out of you.

Trained recruiters, the good ones probably possess a Ried Technique of questioning. They will get what they want to know out of you if you sit there and babble.

Shut up. Answer yes, no, and then shut up. Next question please.

DO NOT LIE. If boss says you got DUI? Say yes and then shut up. Wait for next question.

Keep in mind... in Trucking any company is absolutely authorized to fire you where you are on the end of the earth and have you walk home for failing to disclose what will come out in a proper background check etc.

The application will specify which one they require. Some ask for arrests. Some ask for convictions. They all have a time limit as well. You don't have to tell them about anything that wasn't a conviction by law but they may not hire due to an arrest regardless of the outcome. If I were you, I would have anything on my record that was not a conviction expunged and removed immediately. Every state has a process for handling this. Call your local courthouse and ask how to do it.

Be honest but don't shoot yourself in the foot either. Use a little common sense. Do a criminal background check on yourself and see what's on there.

She did you a favor. Schneider sucks. Get your record straight before applying anywhere else.

I was asked if I had EVER been convicted. Then I was asked if I remembered the circumstances of those convictions, that's what hung me. Unfortunately in Michigan if you have more than 2 convictions you are not eligible to have anything expunged.

The circumstances of you pot conviction will not show up on a background check, unlike the dui which was obviously in a vehicle. So if you are asked just tell them you were caught somewhere in possession. Not in a vehicle. There are other companies that will hire you Keep trying. You'll get there.
