Them trailers Mercer leases don't have chain pulls or J-channels, they are pretty bare bones.

I have seen DOT cops that won't like the way you strapped to the aluminum rub rail. "The rub rail is not a securement device" they might say.

That's gotta suck. As much as I like the features of my east I cannot stand having to hook straps to the rub rail. Guess they didnt read securment rules:biggrin_25526:

This has been covered to death in other threads. It IS legal to hook strap to the rail. Most of us do. Dot prefers you to not hook to the rail if you can avoid it, but don't say you cant. Whats the alternative? J hooks of trailer is equipped?

you guys make some nice points. but i'd never hook to the chain. you have no room for binders except for above the hook. and like one mentioned. that hook comes loose. the entire chain comes loose.

keeping an eye on it. sure. but it could be too late before it's noticed.

and like others have also said. i always wrap my chain around the pocket and hook to the pocket.

i hauled rebar when i frst started out. using the op's method on my first load. and that was the last load i've ever chained like that.

i don't think highway patrol would like that method either.

I am so glad I got away from flatbed. Now I just open the big hole in the top, let the customer pour 45,000 pounds of whatever they want hauled into the hole, then shut the lid. No need to worry about loose chains, cut straps, flapping tarps......

Everyone has their own way of doing it. Me? I woulda ran each chain around the stake pocket and back up to the chain if that's the way you wanna do it. There again, if it didn't fall off, I'd say you're good to go. :)

Looks good to me and should make dot happy with 2 pockets being used that should put your working ld at what 11,000# instead of just the one pocket at what 5500#

Looks good to go to me also. If I were coming thru Michigan, I would make sure the strap and chain weren't touching. Those stake pockets are usually rated for around 5000lbs, pretty much the same as your chain and most tensioners. So,as long as you dont overtighten the tensioner than you wont bend a link or the pocket. I would use the Jrail, pop ups or under the deck when its available but you do what you can with what you have.
