You are correct, and that's the law.

In real life, you pull around behind the scale house and park, then you get your log book out and change your duty status to 'On Duty', since you're not driving any more. Then you take a few minutes to collect your paperwork before you walk inside. So yes, you've got 5 minutes or so to get yourself updated. If you're a couple of entries behind, the time it takes to get caught up won't even be noticed.

Bottom line is, if you're operating legally within the HOS guidelines, you won't be hassled over it.

Soon, everyone will be on electronic logs, so this won't be an issue.

I'm with you on the E-logs. I always used paper logs. The thing is most times when I got pulled around back the officer at the static scale always got my paperwork right there at the scale.

Whenever I got asked to come in, they just told me over the intercom to pull around back and bring my paperwork inside. Or they had me pull around to the inspection area, and told me they'd have someone come out to meet me.

I did. Plenty of posters saying that there's a requirement for a pre-trip, but nobody posting a link to the actual regulation that says there is a requirement for it.

    Because there isn't one.

Exactly. You may have missed when the gentleman asked me to explain what I meant by that post and I replied that it was merely sarcasm.:D

Our company requires more emphasis on the post trip. We need a 15 minute pretrip and 30 minute post trip on our logs. Makes sense to take more time on the post trip, to identify problems that need to be corrected before your 10 hour break is up. Once we get a call from dispatch we have an hour to get to a local shipper or it's a service failure. Pretrip is no time to be discovering you need to deal with inflating tires or rewiring a marker light.
