You ask a good question. I can't answer it, but i am wondering if these Vans are part of a bigger company that may use larger trucks that mandate DOT Authority and MC numbers. If this is the case those numbers may just be painted on all the vehicles. I have some friends that can answer this. I will try to get in touch with them and get an answer. You are right though. If a vehicle is under 10,001, carries less then 16 passengers and is not carrying Hazmat the FMCSA does not regulate it.

There is a running debate going on around here with the farmers. In TN you can drive a loaded class 8 truck and trailer without CDL if you are engaged in farming, within 150 miles of home base. From where I live you can be in KY and still be under the 150 mile radius. Some say you have to have CDL when you cross state lines, others say you don't. I really don't care rnough to look it up and I don't know of anybody that has got caught to be a test case.

I could research this closer but once you cross that state line your in that state. Any Tennessee intrastate law is now null and void. If the FMCSA specifically allows that farm vehicle exception your OK otherwise if you get stopped across that state line you might be in serious trouble.

150 miles regardless of state lines if it's a "covered farm vehicle" this was clarified a while back in the MAP-21 legislation.

Box truck under 26,000, no CDL.

However, if crossing state lines, it IS a commercial vehicle and therefore you need a DOT # (and all compliance requirements thereof), you are subject to Hours of Service regulations (logbook), and for some reason, you need a medical card.

Commercial Vehicles are defined by the FMCSA as any vehicle tagged commercial that has a rated weight over 10,001. With some limited intrastate exceptions a medical card is MANDATED to operate a CMV. People sometime get the CDL license requirements that start after 26,001 as defining a CMV, this is incorrect.
