There is a running debate going on around here with the farmers. In TN you can drive a loaded class 8 truck and trailer without CDL if you are engaged in farming, within 150 miles of home base. From where I live you can be in KY and still be under the 150 mile radius. Some say you have to have CDL when you cross state lines, others say you don't. I really don't care rnough to look it up and I don't know of anybody that has got caught to be a test case.

"if traveling out of the State where it is registered, stays within a 150 air miles of the owner or operator’s farm or ranch" -
Box truck under 26,000, no CDL.
However, if crossing state lines, it IS a commercial vehicle and therefore you need a DOT # (and all compliance requirements thereof), you are subject to Hours of Service regulations (logbook), and for some reason, you need a medical card. -
Commercial Vehicles are defined by the FMCSA as any vehicle tagged commercial that has a rated weight over 10,001. With some limited intrastate exceptions a medical card is MANDATED to operate a CMV. People sometime get the CDL license requirements that start after 26,001 as defining a CMV, this is incorrect.
