I have been working for CRST a little over 3 months now. I know several drivers in my class that have already turned in their trucks. The bottomline is you have to be proactive on the load board. They tell you in class you have to find your own loads and their are correct. I talked to one driver who was turning in his truck and he said he regularly had 200 miles deadheads( but he has asking his fleet manager to help him find loads and calling agents). OMG....I average 14%. I got discouraged when my truck was in the shop about 2 weeks in a 3 week time period but I am out of the hole now. Here is the trick to making things work at CRST......
HAVE A GOOD COMPUTER and fast connection. My beautiful wife, bless her heart, is the driving force behind this driver! She works at night and prowls that load board many times during the day. I am loaded 2 days in advance most of the time. I am making all my payments plus I'm home most weekends but I have her booking my loads and talking to agents. That support at home is essential!!!!!
Those drivers without their own pc's dont have the tools they need to be successful. If you do a lease purchase like I am doing get your tools, and be proactive, This is your business, if you are lazy you are going to fail. PERIOD!
CRST Malone (Flatbed Division) SUCKS!

Good info, thanks! What area are you from that allows you to get home on the weekends? How much are you or could you be grossing each month? (before all expenses are taken out) -
I live in central Alabama and this makes the 9th out of ten weeks I have been at home for the weekend. She gets me home, I guess she just has a talent for that loadboard. I will have to go back and see what I did this last month BUT todays Comdata "payday" was a little over 1k AFTER EXPENSES. I am about a quarter of the way there now. Every few weeks we have to go to another loadboard(like when I needed out of Tulsa this week after getting serviced in OKC) but she doesn't like to do it. Did 5 loads this last week and on track to do 5 this week also. It can be done and if you could come home to that( see attachment), wouldn't you be wanting to come home?lol
Now one thing I don't like is going to Rockport or OKC for service. The home office is in Alabama so why aren't there any service centers in the SE? -

NO. Agents have boards and they have drivers. The BEST freight used to be put on an agent truck. They get 76+8 percent for every load. For great loads, they can broker and get 25-30 percent, without spending a cent. We lost our best loads, to broker fees.Harold196 said: ↑To Clarify... Crst Malone has 2 seperate load boards just like landstar does.. 1 load board is the freight offered to the company O/O and the other is cheapper freight that goes online to everyone.. just like landstar... its very cheap freight..

Does your wife know what you did? Your payday was pocket change.
I hope your wife sees this, and SMACKS you. You're an idiot.Click to expand... -

We owned our trailer and worked for an agent, who hired lousy drivers. Our agent didn't take care of his trailers. His drivers got pinged on inspections. They wrecked trucks. Our agent was required to have ALL drivers assigned to him, take part in a special "safety" conference. Our agent was in the top 10% of infractions. I have no idea why we stayed. In the end, we couldn't haul our own trailer. We got stuck with crappy trailers. DH was always fixing the trailers. I was pissed that we could never put a load on our trailer. You asked me why we didn't haul our trailer. Well, "The load is too tall. Take this DD, with faulty lights." "It needs to go now, and we can't move it." The excuses just got weaker.
We made money with CRST-Malone. We used to have our own authority. We hauled cattle and wheat. My husband had a funny feeling about the cattle. We signed up with CRST-Malone; Eastern Cattle went bankrupt, and he was correct.
We got pegged for oversized loads, so we couldn't run out and take freight. We did. Couple of years ago, they were upset we took 3-4 days to come home with a decent load. After we had our trailer, we'd just stay out and work.
They were short on drivers and wanted DH back, to take another load. Everything paid less. Oversize were down to $1.85 per mile. They demanded we take a trailer, pay rent and fix it.
CRST-Malone was a decent company. They have issues. Al's drivers make money. CRST-Malone is trying to take Al's business.
I don't think you know how bad business has become.Click to expand...
I was never pushed too much to haul freight. I did butt heads with them from time to time when they tried to get me to take a load for less than my minimum haul rate. I never had any issues with their trailers. I rented one directly from CRST Flatbed (Malone) and only for a short time until I could find a flatbed that I wanted to purchase. Maintenance was never an issue. Debbie in Atlanta thought that I should run all of her freight, but I had freight about 10 minutes from where I parked my truck. I could not see driving 150 miles to take one of hers and with a $0.10/mile cut in rate.
If that is correct about Al, they may find it difficult to take his business. He could always go with a different company. His customers are pretty loyal and most have been with him for many years. I am not sure what they could be thinking. I had heard some rumors about the Chicago agent. As I recall, Debbie, Doug and Al were the only ones that I remember who had their own trucks and trailers. I don't remember any of them asking me to pull their trailers.
I worked with a dispatcher in Trussville for the most part. I did call some agents about loads and even brokered some loads. My experience was much different than yours. I have spoken to a couple of long time owner operators who are still with CRST Malone. They still seemed to be doing well. I think that most of those with whom I was acquainted have moved or no longer with them. It does sound as though your problem came more from an agent that the company. I still get emails and phone calls from time to time. I just received a text message from them last week. I am doing well running my own authority. I am doing better than I have ever done leasing to a carrier. Hopefully, I won't ever need to lease to someone again. Perhaps I need to find owner operators to lease on to me and sit home and dispatch.Click to expand...volvodriver01 Thanks this. -
