I live in Illinois and most of my miles are in Illinois, by far the highest tax state I run in. I try to fuel in Illinois but it's not always practical. In any case you either pay now or pay later. Other than driving out of route into IN, MO or IA don't see how I can save much.

If you purchase most of your fuel in Illinois and only run the states you listed, I don't understand why you should be paying an additional $890/year in fuel taxes. Sometimes it is less expensive to pay the difference in fuel taxes at the end of a quarter rather than pay a higher price at the pump. Even if you pay more with your IFTA filings you could actually be paying less for fuel. If you want to check to see what you are really paying, you could take fuel prices in those states where you run, deduct the actual fuel tax rates and see the real cost of the fuel. It could help in planning fuel purchases. Sometimes the higher price at the pump is the cheapest in the long run. Other times it may be more cost efficient to buy in the cheaper states and pay any difference at the end of the quarter. Any money you can save is money in your pocket. I think the most that I can remember ever paying extra is about $75. But, I watch where I purchase my fuel and manage those purchases to maximize my savings. It could put several hundred dollars in your pocket. -

I worked for Malone for 6 months. Its OKAY. Not exceptional though. If you are running LEGAL...as you SHOULD...then what you can potentially make AFTER you establish your broker connections is basically equivalent to a company salary...minus the benefits. As i am healthy without dependents i was happy with a life insurance policy and i liked being able to pick my loads and where i go. But DONT ever piss off brokers especially CRST logistic brokers because they will and DO play favorites in handing out loads. You want to be their FRIEND...and all will be OKAY and if you can survive it for 2-3 years you just might own a truck as well. Good luck and DONT go west unless you have a guaranteed backhaul!

OK, I see your point about the real cost of the fuel. I also have to consider the discounts I get through the carrier that change on a daily basis. Unfortunately as a one man operation working long days it can be very difficult to actually manage the business beyond finding profitable loads. But thanks for the reply.
