Thank you, Texastrucker. I have a shiny new CDL and I am ready to hit the road. You are right that one needs to pay his dues. This will be my third career where I'll be making such sacrifices for a future in the trucking industry.
I know there are people who have had bad experiences with even the best companies. I've learned how to play the game and how not to piss off the wrong people.
Most of the sour grapes I've seen here are based on individuals' actions and lack thereof or how they interact with the people who are going to get them rolling -- or NOT.
I've been idling for 20 months and I am chomping at the bit to get rolling in my new career.

I am brand new -- got a shiny new CDL with zero miles in my mirror.

According to "The 7 BIGGEST Mistakes by CDL Students and New Drivers" Copyright 2009 – Truth About Trucking, LLC:
Leaving the truck driving job after only one, two or three months, is like digging your own professional truck driving grave. First, the trucking company just possibly shelled out thousands of dollars for your training. Secondly, they will look at you as someone who really is not serious about being an OTR driver and finally, they will most likely turn around and file a negative complaint on you against your DAC Report. This DAC file could turn out to be your “nail in the coffin.”

If I were a hiring manager, I wouldn't hire a job jumper. The hiring process is far too expensive to take on someone who isn't going to hang around for long.

Look for the brochure mentioned above; you can download it for free. It has a lot of good insight for new drivers.

I went to CRST in Carlisle a couple weeks ago. I had a controlled medication issue which I disclosed two weeks before I was to report. I had a doctor's note and was told that I would be okay.
At the Concentra lab they told me differently. In order to be DOT-compliant, I would need a form with DOT-specific language signed by my doctor. A fax was sent to my doctor and he quickly sent it back.
I went through four days of orientation and then found out that I was going home! I had the phone number of one of the guys who was in orientation with me. I called him up last week to find out how he was doing. I received some interesting information. HE was bounced for bad urine; he told me that there was no way it should have turned up dirty. I also found out that, of the eleven drivers in the group, only two were hired! Here comes the best part: He told me that the person running the orientation knew before I got there that I was going to bounce!
Are you sure you want to go to CRST??

Most common reason newbies get sent home......unverifiable employment background and old unpaid tickets or criminal record. If you have been without a job for too long, collected unemployment, or were on workers compensation .....you will have a difficult time getting a driving position otr.:biggrin_25511:

They'll need to physically verify previous employment via phone or email. They do all this during orientation. Dot regulations not Crst.

U are not hired till the last day off orientation u can go all the way through class and if they can't verifiy past employment u will have problems best thing is know the last ten years of employment if u were not working and have a gap in there u need to know what u were doing my wife worked with me there and took a 1 1/2 off to baby sit are grand kids and then came back and had to have a letter signed by 2 people and notarized so have all your ducks in a row
Good luck I have been with Crst 7 years I do my job and I have no problems
