I disabled the governer on my 389 but if the speed limit is under 60 ypu can get away with 8-9 over but if it's 65+ you only get about 5 over
Jeck Thanks this. -

Old man told me a long time ago, let the load and the road determine your speed.
His philosophy was "get on the highway. Set your cruise at 55, every couple minutes bump it up another mile or two. When you get to that point just beyond the piston chatter bump it one more mile. Based on your weight and overall road, that point just above the chatter is where the engine is going to perform best overall."
I've been doing that since I've been out here and I almost consistently run right between 60 and 64. I'm always on time, and I average about 7.2mpg.
Oh by the way, the old man that taught me this process of optimizing had been driving for 44 years. Very wise truck driver named Bill Thurman. He's gone now and the trucking industry lost a great pioneer who at the time of his passing had celebrated 46 years. -
I would have loved to meet your boss back then. Good luck. -
Almost his whole life behind the wheel.
With in just a couple of years he was gone but not forgotten. -

I was less inclined on fuel mileage until very late in my own run in 2001. I was handed a run from Oregon to Tuscon with the rule not to fill in CA due to over flowing filling from the fleet that month... (Fuel permits and things way beyond my paygrade...) and I nursed that FLD 120 1625 miles on the ground sticking my fuel tank moving from one abandoned 50's era fuel stop to another literally praying for a dallop of fuel before Tuscon.
Ive always lived and died by 300 gallons at a time, mileage be ######. But that was one of the first times it was really important not to waste it. She did well. Thank god. I probably would have gotten another 120 miles out of her for a rough guessamate of 1750ish out of 310 usable. I don't know what mileage per mile gallon burn that was but it was epic.
It is good to remember people who have passed, that way they never really die. -
I got real lucky once running the 10 to El Paso. Only had 8500 in custom aluminum on the deck that I picked up in Sante Fe Springs. Caught a huge tail wind all the way from Banning to Phoenix.
By the time all was said and done I averaged overall 14+ per gallon.
Boss called after the trip telling me my log book was wrong because I hadn't shown any additional fuel stops. I just laughed.
Of course going back the other way I was quite a bit heavier had the same wind, but this time it was a head wind. The return was barely 3.8. He never let me hear the end of that one.
